Stranger Things has been one of Netflix’s most-watched originals, critically acclaimed for its soundtrack, direction, characterization, and writing. The show premiered in July 2016 and steadily rose through the ranks as one of the biggest fantasy TV series ever of the decade.
Season 4 was the highest-rated season of the show, considering that the latest season gave viewers approximately 13 hours of fantasy horror, dramatic mystery, superpower action, and emotional surprises.
Even though all seasons have had eight or nine episodes, Season 4 was the only season with movie-length episodes, the longest with a runtime of 2 hours and 19 minutes. Season 4 unraveled all the past enemy’s links to the super big evil Vecna/One/Henry.
The Duffer brothers have confirmed that the upcoming fifth season will be the end of Stranger Things. They claim that the show will go back to the simplicity of Season 1 with no more new characters, and the grand finale will decide the fate of the D&D Party.
Matt and Ross Duffer have also stated that the runtime of Season 5 will be much shorter compared to Season 4, which was the lengthiest season of the show. They explained that to set up the story for the final showdown that will go down in Season 5, they wanted to justify every detail of the story with ample screen time.
Confirming their previous statement of a shorter season, the official Stranger Things writing team’s Twitter account posted the episode count in a BTS image from the writers’ room, where Season 5 is currently in development.
The image shows a board with eight episodes mapped out in a grid, revealing that the upcoming season will end the series with the final eight episodes.
With the story currently in development, fans can expect filming to begin sometime in 2023. This sets a mid-2024 release date for the fifth and final season where Vecna will either destroy the world and remake it in his image, or Eleven and her friends will be able to seal the Upside Down forever.
