Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will keep exploring the depths of the bond between Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and Helmsman Ortegas (Melissa Navia) with an even closer look into their relationship.
Strange New Worlds captures The USS Enterprise’s journey through the galaxy and how Captain Pike and his crew go on to discover new worlds. The Star Trek: Discovery spinoff series explains in detail the adventures faced by Captain Pike and his crew a decade before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series.
Season 1 aired on May 5, 2022, and with 9 out of 10 episodes out on Paramount+, Season 2 has already entered the production stage and will release sometime in 2023. The sci-fi TV series also stars Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Bruce Horak, Rebecca Romijn, Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, and Celia Rose Gooding.
Season 1 had shown the more informal dynamic between Pike and Ortegas, suggested by their playful banter and friendly speech. Melissa Navia said that the first season serves as the base for furthering the depths of their bond and even gives a close-up of other relationships on the spaceship.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, Melissa Navia discloses that Season 2 will go to length into exploring Pike and Ortegas’ bond.
One thing that fans have pointed out was that [Pike] frequently refers to her as Erica. I don’t think Anson or I ever thought anything too much about it, but I love that he does because you see that there is this friendship there that is not just official, but it doesn’t undermine the fact that they are professionals and that they trust each other in life-or-death situations. So yeah, you’re going to see more of that in Season 2.
Navia also complimented the creators and fellow actor Anson Mount on perfectly depicting the subtle beauty of the relationship between Pike and Ortegas.
Sometimes people are like, ‘Oh, [the banter] it’s too informal to be realistic.’ When you speak to members of the military, and you speak to people who are in life and death situations in their work all the time, it is absolutely reality to have gallows humor. To be able to talk as if you’re not navigating through a field of meteors. You’re acting like it’s just every day, but you have to, or else you will lose your mind. I think Pike and Ortegas really embodied that.
Season 2 plans to fill out the details of lore and canon shown to viewers in Star Trek: The Original Series. According to sources, the TV series will introduce Paul Wesley of The Vampire Diaries as James T. Kirk.
Strange New Worlds has given more insight into the characters we know and love and allowed a fleshed-out analysis of their characters—something Star Trek: The Original Series failed to do.
The writers of the spinoff series have managed to expertly balance the sense of discovery that the Star Trek Universe has shown in every show with a more understandable growth and development of the characters. Fans are eager to see what the cast and creators have in store for Season 2.
