Steve Carell’s Space Force Renewed for a Second Season

Netflix has ordered a second season of Steve Carell’s Space Force and it will receive a creative makeover. The space comedy, which stemmed from the US’s endeavour to create a sixth branch of the military, had premiered on the streaming service in May 2020. The first season had received mixed reviews from both critics and the general public.

Space Force revolves around the United States Space Force, an offshoot of the United States Air Force. The Space Force is tasked with sending Americans to the moon by 2024 to militarize outer space and establish dominance in it. General Mark Naird (Steve Carell), an Air Force officer, is appointed to head the nascent and entirely inexperienced organization.

The series is as much a workplace comedy as it is a political comedy. The first season of Space Force had been helmed by Greg Daniels and Steve Carell himself. The duo had previously delivered the mockumentary-style workplace comedy The Office, which is considered to be the funniest and possibly the best sitcom in American television history.

The fact that Netflix took so many months to renew the show is a hint to Space Force’s performance; despite having a stellar cast and a brilliant writer duo, the first season of the show had not grabbed many eyeballs. The upcoming creative changes might be the result of this performance.

In the second season, Norm Hiscock (Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine) is joining Carell and Daniels as a writer. Jimmy O. Yang, who is Carell’s co-star in the show, will also be a part of the writing team. In addition, the filming location will move from Los Angeles to Vancouver to reduce the production cost.

Steve Carell, John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Tawny Newsome, Diana Silvers and the rest of the cast of the first season are set to reprise their roles in the second season.

Space Force season two will start filming next year. Netflix has not yet announced a date for the launch of the new season.
