Star Wars: The Bad Batch returned to Disney+ this Wednesday and kicked off season 2 with a dual-episode premiere. Clone Force 99 and their newest member, Omega, made their comeback to the small screens after a year of running missions for the Trandoshan entrepreneur Cid.
The season 2 premiere kicked off with high stakes for the Bad Batch – one last mission to earn their freedom from the life of a mercenary group. After learning the Imperials are emptying Count Dooku’s palace on Serenno from Phee Genoa, Cid sends the group on a mission to retrieve his war chest before the Empire gets its hands on it.
Considering the group just returned to their hideout at Ord Mantell after a mission that almost went sideways, you’d think they’d hesitate as Hunter did. But the lure of freedom had them on their ships in a hurry, and Omega overhears Echo detailing how they’re in this mess because of Omega.
Cut to them risking their lives at the Outer Rim, the group is separated with Hunter and Wrecker down on the ground without backup and the rest stuck in a cargo ship ready to make its way to the Empire.
Thank God, Disney+ gave us two episodes instead of one because that cliffhanger at the end of episode 1 could’ve killed us if we’d had to wait another week to know what happens next.
Episode 2 commences with Echo, Omega, and Tech making it to the ground after crashing an Empire cargo ship, desperately trying to reconvene with Hunter and Wrecker. They meet Romar, a Serennian who bares the secrets behind the war chest’s connection to the planet’s Imperial guests.
Cut to the group uniting as Hunter and Wrecker fight off the Imperials, and Romar saves Echo and Omega from a nasty fall. A heartful moment where echo reminds Omega needn’t try so hard to “redeem” herself, they all volunteered to keep her safe, and they’d continue doing so, with or without their freedom.
The mission fails, but they’re all safe on the ship, and Echo reminds Hunter they need to do more in defiance of the Empire. Meanwhile, Rampart slaughters Captain Wilco to retain Clone Force 99’s trail and ensure no one else knows they made it out alive.
With episode 2 ending, Hunter and Echo’s conversation hints at bigger things coming the Bad Batch’s way, where they’d have to take a much riskier stand against the Empire and Palpatine himself. Rampart is on their backs, so they’d have to evade him while finding another way to earn their freedom.
Omega’s need to get the Bad Batch out of their current situation, and her guilt over putting them in this mess in the first place, spells some emotional trouble coming the young clone’s way.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch will return weekly with new episodes every Wednesday on Disney+.
