We finally got details of how Yoda survived on the planet Dagobah from the upcoming Star Wars book.

The Jedi Master Yoda was first introduced in the 1980 sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, hiding alone on the planet Dagobah. We saw our favorite Luke Skywalker take his X-Wing to Dagobah to train with Yoda so that he could take on Darth Vader.

In Star Wars: Episode III, Darth Sidious ordered the execution of all remaining Jedi. That caused Yoda to go into hiding on planet Dagobah. He would spend twenty years in isolation on that planet before being discovered by Luke Skywalker.

Star Wars fans must have noticed that Yoda always wore the musical instrument blissl around his neck. It might initially seem to be a very insignificant detail, but the latest Star Wars book suggests otherwise!

At New York Comic Con in 2022, Lucasfilm Publishing revealed details about Yoda’s blissl from the upcoming Star Wars book.

According to Star Wars: 100 Objects by Kristin Baver, the blissl was instrumental in helping Yoda cope with the solitude. He understood the power of music and its benefits and would often play the blissl in sync with nature.

“Dagobah’s lush ecosystem, strong in the Force, also provided him with the means to create the blissl. This tiny pipe instrument from his days of isolation suggests that Yoda instinctively understood the psychological benefits of creating an artifact and experiencing a moment of joy, despite the widespread turmoil afflicting the galaxy. It’s intriguing to think of Yoda, always deeply in touch with the Force, alone on Dagobah yet surrounded by a landscape teeming with life, and finding some solace in music. Perhaps, during his final days, Yoda would have essayed a tune on the blissl, adding his own melody to the chorus of the natural world around him.”

Beauty Lies in the Details

The Star Wars franchise is sprinkled with minute details, which cater to casual and die-hard fans alike. Some specific details that are just there for the easter eggs include C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels appearing as a club patron in Star Wars: Episode II-Attack of the Clones.

However, minor details like Yoda’s blissl are not only there for the show but also serve a purpose. They help us get into the mindset of the characters and understand the details more thoroughly.

The films also offer many subtle details that foreshadow a character’s future or plotlines. For instance, in Episode III’s scene, when Anakin and Obi-Wan meet as friends for the last time, Obi-Wan stands in the light while Anakin is seen in the shadows.

While other subtle objects in the franchise tell a story, props like Yoda’s blissl have become significant over time as more additions have been made.
