According to a Variety report about Dave Filoni, Rangers of the New Republic is no longer in active development at Lucasfilm studio.
No reason was given for this decision, and there was no mention of whether the series has been put on indefinite hold or had some scope in the future.
Rangers of the New Republic was supposed to be a spinoff of the hit Star Wars series The Mandalorian. As The Mandalorian moves forward with Season 3, there have been reports of multiple series in the making.
New spinoffs announced at Disney’s Investors Day presentation back in December 2020 were The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Rangers of the New Republic.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had confirmed they’d be attached to The Mandalorian to build up to a crossover event. As of now, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka are still in the works.
Gina Carano, who played Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, was recently fired after receiving backlash on social media over a controversial post. This might’ve affected Rangers of the New Republic‘s development, as Carano’s character was supposedly going to be the center of it.
No actor has been recast for the role of Cara Dune as of yet. Chances are, production might move forward when/if that happens. The series not being in active development doesn’t mean that it is canceled. It simply means that it is not the top priority for the studio at the moment.
There is a possibility that the series might be picked up in the future when the current productions of top-priority shows wrap up. Let’s wait and watch how it pans out.
