Star Wars Game in ‘Early Stages of Development’: Ubisoft CEO

On a post-earnings investors call, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that the company’s new open-world Star Wars project is in the “early stages of development”.

The game was announced last month by Division 2 helmers Ubisoft Massive Entertainment and came with no additional news of a title or release period. Since EA currently holds exclusive rights for Star Wars games, fans have been constantly speculating if and when the game will drop. But it seems that the game is quite far away from release.

EA has previously mentioned that the exclusivity deal signed with Lucasfilm, in 2013, would last for 10 years; and the company’s Comms Director in January confirmed that the deal is still in place.

This means that the game is likely to drop well after 2023.

In the same call, Yves was also asked if the game’s development would affect additional content development for The Division 2. Expressing his confidence in Massive Entertainment, Yves said,

“The implication on The Division, you have to know that the Massive studio is a large studio and they are also collaborating with lots of studios over the world—lots of inside studios—so you are going to see more on The Division in this year and the year after.”

Massive is also working on a game for James Cameron’s groundbreaking 3D franchise Avatar which is set to release in March 2023.

And just like Massive, Lucasfilm also has its fingers in multiple gaming pies.

Bethesda recently announced that it was having Machine Games – the developers behind the Wolfenstien series – work on a brand new Indiana Jones IP. With nothing else known about the game at the moment except for the teaser, it is likely that this, like its space-y Star Wars brethren, will also be an open-world adventure.
