Terry Matalas, the showrunner of Star Trek: Picard, has confirmed that the production for the second season of the show has finally begun. Matalas announced the news through his Twitter page and later deleted the tweet. Although the production has resumed, the chances are that Picard will not be returning to screens this year. The second season will premiere in 2022 along with a host of other Star Trek shows on Paramount+.
The first season of Picard debuted on the streaming service in January 2020 and brought back Patrick Stewart’s beloved Star Trek character Jean-Luc Picard. Picking up 20 years after Picard’s final appearance in Star Trek: Nemesis, it focuses on the former captain of the USS Enterprise as he mourns the death of Data and the destruction of the planet Romulus.
He comes out of his self-imposed exile when a young woman convinces him to return to space hopping once more.
Production for the second season was scheduled to start in June 2020 but was delayed due to the pandemic. While all the other Star Trek shows on Paramount+ film in Canada, Picard films in Los Angeles, which is one of the cities in the US that has been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic. After series star Patrick Stewart got vaccinated, filming is taking place with full steam.
After Terry Matalas deleted the tweet announcing the beginning of production, he followed it with a cheeky tweet stating that the previous one was redacted by Section 31. The news has not been announced by the official page of the show, so it is possible that Matalas sent out the news pre-emptively. Take a look at the tweet below:
Picard fans might be disappointed that the second season will not premiere this year, but they will be happy to know that the show has already been renewed for another season. With a new showrunner coming onboard in season two (first season showrunner Michael Chabon will only serve as writer and producer in this season, as Matalas takes his place), there might be some big changes in the series.
