Star Trek: Picard has delved into Jean-Luc Picard’s life post-retirement, but according to the show’s executive producer, Terry Matalas, it can broaden its horizons. The show, set to return in 2023 with season 3, will connect to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.
The show’s past two seasons have explored Picard’s story after the events of Star Trek: Next Generation. Season 3 will premiere on February 23, 2023, and Matalas has previously announced the latest season will portray the lives of many characters from the Next Generation cast.
The spinoff show will welcome back some beloved characters, such as Michael Dorn’s Worf, Jonathan Frakes’ William Riker, and LeVar Burton’s Geordi La Forge. The upcoming season will see Picard reunite with his old crew of the USS Enterprise, but the rest of the plot remains a mystery.
In an interview with Den of Geek, the Star Trek: Picard EP teased how the show’s next season will connect to Deep Space Nine and Voyager, tying in major events from the two shows and celebrating Star Trek history.
I think that it’s crucial for Deep Space Nine fans to feel seen. It’s [Star Trek: Picard] a continuation of Voyager, too, with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in our show. If you’re going to be in this time period, there’s such a rich opportunity to honor what came before.
Matalas’ comment hints at the show traipsing through more Star Trek history, finding older characters and unfinished plot lines, which the show can develop and bring forth to answer long standing questions.
We have yet to learn which of the plot holes will be explored in the upcoming season, but we know the final voyage will surely be Jean-Luc Picard’s most dangerous one yet.
The show’s connection to other past Star Trek shows means we can get a closer look at how the characters of the past are living their lives presently, and hopefully, the last season will do their stories justice too.
