Star Trek: Picard resumes filming after it was reported that production on the series had shut down due to surging COVID-19 cases on-set.
Earlier last week, THR broke the news of the series’ season 2 filming being halted when 50+ cast and crew members tested positive.
However, series EP, Terry Matalas, took to Twitter to announce that production had resumed last Friday. TrekMovie.com later confirmed that filming has indeed resumed on set in Los Angeles.
Matalas’ tweet read, “Back at it this AM,” with a picture on the set of Picard, an LCARS EPS Network displayed in what looks like a new Starfleet ship.
The pandemic had previously pushed Picard back to 2021 from its original 2020 filming schedule. As both seasons 2 and 3 have been greenlit, they’re being filmed back-to-back.
Production was halted for only four days. Although some of the primary cast members were also tested positive, series lead Patrick Stewart was not one of them. Hence, filming was able to resume within such a short span.
Due to the Omicron variant, other programs are being halted, pushed back, or shifted to virtual mode. These include the Grammy Awards, Sundance Film Festival, and other such events.
Picard has a massive crew of more than 450 staffers. As the Omicron variant still possesses a threat of further delays, fans remain hopeful that they won’t have to wait for the upcoming seasons for long.
Star Trek: Picard season 2 has a February 17 date set for Paramount+.
