Burnham manages to get through to Book, who had growing reservations about the weapon in the first place. However, her efforts fail when Tarka acts on impulse and fires the weapon anyway.
Firing the weapon does not resolve the issue of the dark anomaly, as another one just replaces the one that was destroyed. To make matters worse, Species 10C is now going to respond to this attack in one way or another as it could be seen as an act of war. How will Starfleet manage the crisis at hand? Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 9 Recap
Now that they’ve acquired the isolinium, Book and Tarka complete assembling the device. However, Book still has reservations about the moral implications of carrying out their plan. Meanwhile, there are still concerns about Burnham’s capability to handle the case due to her personal involvement with Book, leading to Commander Nhan being assigned to make sure the mission is completed.
The Discovery follows Book through a tracker on his ship to stop them before they make contact with Species 10C. However, Book and Tarka quickly catch on to the fact that they’re being tracked when Saru’s covert mission fails. There is a showdown between the two ships and several warning shots are fired.
In an attempt to keep the situation from escalating further, Burnham persuades Nhan to let her try to talk down Book from firing the weapon one last time. Book does agree to her offer of one week’s time to try to carry out a diplomatic arrangement with Species 10C, but Tarka fires the experimental weapon anyway. A new dark matter anomaly replaces the one that was destroyed by the weapon.
