We all know Robert Downey Jr., who brought famous roles like Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes to life. But a lesser known and equally deserving legend in the filmmaking industry might have gone unnoticed in his son’s shadow.
RDJ is bringing the story of his father’s legacy onto screens in the new Netflix documentary Sr. The documentary will explore his father’s biggest high points in life and his last days and will go into the depths of his relationship with RDJ.
Netflix just dropped the trailer for the film directed by Chris Smith on YouTube, and you can watch it below:
Robert Downey Sr. is best known for his work as an underground maverick filmmaker, his most commendable project was Putney Swope. The 1969 satirical comedy commented on corporate corruption, Hollywood’s portrayal of race, and the satire of the advertising world.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights character Buck Swope paid homage to the countercultural comedy. The director is also one of the big names in the film, along with Alan Arkin and Mezi Atwood.
Robert Downey SR. died on July 7, 2021, shortly after his 85th birthday, after complications occurred in his battle with Parkinson’s. RDJ documented his life three years before his death on camera, which will be featured in the Netflix film.
Robert Downey Sr. continued his work on minimal budgets in the 60s and 70s and made independent film projects. This will be highlighted along with how the films connected the father and son while also focusing on the last days before his death.
The Netflix documentary will air on the streaming platform on December 2, 2022, approximately a year after the director’s death. It will be the perfect tribute to his wholesome life and a grand celebration of his family’s love for him.
