Chapter 63 of “Spy x Family” proves to us that spy work is indeed rather difficult. One mission with the famed “Handler” is enough to teach us that spy work is not for everybody.
Being devoid of all personal bias and being unaffected by public opinion. Look at every situation with brutal objectivity and understand the nuances in every case. Acting with extreme caution and being aware of all variables at play is what makes a good spy.
Jonas Wellman’s peace mission to the West brings with it quite a number of volatile elements. Some stemming from his very own personality and some from the peace that he would be representing.
Making sure that peace is preserved is their mission,“Handling,” is a bigger challenge than we might be aware of.

Our expectations are subverted once again with chapter 63 as it takes us for a ride alongside the Handler and the rest of the Westalis secret service. The aim was to preserve the peace that Jonas Wellman represented to the West.
The task of ensuring Jonas’ safety and security turned out to be an easier task than training the rookies to keep an objective outlook.
I am not even sure if making any predictions has any meaning now, not after all the times we have been bamboozled by the author. Still, it has been quite some time since we have seen Anya and her friends in action, and there is nothing we would love to see more than some lighthearted schoolyard fan.

Chapter 64 of Spy X Family is not on a break. It will continue serializing bi-weekly and will appear in the next issue of the Shonen Jump + as usual.

4. Recap of Chapter 63
Chapter 63 trudges over some dark waters with the Westalis Intelligence being tasked with ensuring the safety of John Wellman as well as the integrity of his mission.
John Wellman, a well-established former opera singer of the East was to go on a trip to the West. His mission was to promote peace and a unified sense of peaceful coexistence between the two states clearly in a state of the cold war.
As with all good things, this is met with heavy resistance as far-right tabloids publish sensationalized articles to sully Jonas Wellman’s name. All to make sure that his objective is failed before it even begins.
The effects of those tabloids are felt even in the Westalis Intelligence headquarters. The rookie is unable to dissociate his opinion from what the tabloids feed him.
Thanks to what he has been reading, he is vehemently against Jonas Wellman coming to the West. His complaints are heard by the Handler, who goes ahead and sets him straight.
A death threat with the name of Jonas Wellman reaches the hands of the Intelligence, who quickly springs into action.
The next morning all the allegations thrown at Jonas Wellman are rebutted, and his name is publicly cleared. This has the same effect on the rookie as the previous news. This leaves a bad taste in the Handler’s mouth, but she does not do much in this case.
It is the same morning as projected on the death threat. If the assassination were to take place, it would be in a public place to send the message that the assassin was trying to. The location was to be the Opera House where Jonas Wellman was currently in.
The Intelligence already had their people all over the place and had it under active surveillance. The Handler looks at the security team and pinpoints the one who looks sketchy. Lo and behold, that is the very man who was planning to go through with the assassination.
The Handler with her incredible skills with the belt and some support from her people is able to take the assassin down. He turns out to be one of the ex-military hardheads who know only one thing and that is war.
Once that is taken care of, Jonas Wellman is cleared to go through with his trip to the West. The Handler reveals then that he indeed had his fair share of mistresses and that one of them turned out to be the wife of an organized crime boss’s wife.
The rookie is confused and doesn’t know what to believe. The Handler’s only advice to him is to use his head and find his own truth.

Spy × Family is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump.
The story follows a spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realizing that the girl he adopts as a daughter and the woman he agrees to be in a fake marriage with are a mind reader and an assassin respectively.
Season 2 and a theatrical film are releasing in 2023.
