A new rumor for Spider-Man: No Way Home claims that the movie will include Lizard and Rhino from the Amazing Spider-Man series. When the franchise was rebooted for the MCU by Marvel Studios and Sony, they sought to ensure that the movies would be different from the prior ones.
But if the latest rumors are correct, then more villains from the previous series could be making a comeback. Jeff Sneider of Collider took to his The Sneider Cut podcast and revealed that he has heard Lizard and Rhino will be making appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Rhys Ifans portrayed Lizard, aka Curt Connors, in The Amazing Spider-Man, while Rhino, aka Aleksei Sytsevich, was played by Paul Giamatti in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, neither of them have been spotted during No Way Home’s production, nor has Marvel or Sony confirmed their involvement.
Although most viewers admired Ifans’ portrayal of Lizard, Giamatti’s Rhino remains a weak link from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But since both characters were left alive by the end of their respective movies, their appearances could easily be incorporated into the multiverse plot of Spider-Man 3.
However, if Marvel plans to make changes to their characterizations, the versions of Lizard and Rhino in the upcoming movie might be changed from the ones in Marc Webb’s films. Furthermore, their appearances in No Way Home could be Marvel and Sony’s latest way of setting up the Sinister Six.
Lizard and Rhino’s involvement marks the assemblage of six villains rumored to appear in No Way Home, so it cannot be considered a coincidence. As reported earlier, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin is speculated to be the main villain in No Way Home.
Alfred Molina has already confirmed his return as Spider-Man 2’s Doctor Octopus, and Jamie Foxx, too, has backed up reports of him playing Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Thomas Hayden Church will reprise his role as Sandman from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, as well.
Thus, these villains could either team up to take on Peter or form a supervillain alliance in a future MCU project. Either way, it will be interesting to see what direction the studio takes these characters in and whether it proves to be successful.
