Sony’s shared Marvel Universe is set to make its debut with Spider-Man: No Way Home, according to Sony executive Sanford Panitch. Sony’s rights over Marvel’s Spider-Man films have been involved in a complicated history for years now.
However, things took an interesting turn when both media powerhouses collaborated to bring Spider-Man into the MCU in 2016.
Now, Variety has reported that the Sony president suggested that Spider-Man 3 would help launch a shared universe.
While addressing the issues that restrict MCU’s Spider-Man from making an appearance in Sony’s Marvel films, Panitch revealed that they have a plan that he believes fans are beginning to catch up to.
Sparing any further details, he revealed that those tensions would soon be resolved and things will become a lot clearer once Spider-Man: No Way Home releases. Read his full statement below:
“There actually is a plan. I think now maybe it’s getting a little more clear for people where we’re headed and I think when No Way Home comes out, even more will be revealed. The great thing is we have this very excellent relationship with Kevin [Feige]. There’s an incredible sandbox there to play with. We want those MCU movies to be absolutely huge, because that’s great for us and our Marvel characters, and I think that’s the same thing on their side. But we have a great relationship. There’s lots of opportunities, I think, that are going to happen”
Although Panitch was careful about not letting on too much regarding how this matter would be resolved, he was sure to hint at the “excellent” relationship between themselves and Marvel Studios.
Thus, the gist of his statement hints that something will happen in the upcoming movie that could open the door for a Sony/Marvel universe.
This immediately brings fans to the rumors that No Way Home will introduce the multiverse and feature former Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
While the latter has denied involvement, the theory is still being supported thanks to Alfred Molina’s return as Doctor Octopus and the introduction of the multiverse with WandaVision.
Panitch also suggested that Kraven will reveal more, which makes one question whether previous Sony movies and Marvel’s upcoming ones are all connected to the MCU in a way that, hopefully, will get clear with time.
While it remains to be seen how exactly No Way Home sets up the shared universe, the Sony exec seems confident about the future.
As he revealed in his statement, both parties look forward to more collaborative projects amidst the many opportunities awaiting. But despite whichever big direction their plans might go, fans hope this new reconciliation might help renew Tom Holland’s contract with Marvel.
