“Y’all not ready for this squad!!!!” assured basketball superstar LeBron James, when he had released the first stills of Space Jam: A New Legacy. And boy, was he right, considering the lit team members of Bugs Bunny.
Similar to the unique first film with Michael Jordan, a lot of fan favorites from the original Looney Tunes cartoons can be seen in the movie.
While there are dozens of Looney Tunes characters to be featured as spectators, including Bugs Bunny, only 12 are confirmed to be participating in the match against the Goon Squad, a series of AI-created digitized versions of current NBA and WNBA stars trying to defeat LeBron James and the Looney Tunes.
Due to a controversy, Pepe Le Pew—who was in the first movie—will be sitting out the sequel. And based on the trailer and TV spots, it seems like the Barnyard Dawg and Marvin the Martian may not be playing either.
However, the Looney Tunes will have loads of representatives tearing up the court docket for the match with the Goon Squad.
Given that most of the characters on the team were responsible for the win over the Monstars in the 1996 movie, there’s no doubt why Bug refers to them as his “dream team”.
Here’s the confirmed Looney Tunes characters to be recruited by Bugs Bunny for Space Jam 2.
1 Granny
Granny, the aged proprietor of Sylvester and Tweety, was a cheerleader in Space Jam, but it seems like she’ll be an important member of the squad in Space Jam 2. One of the many highlights of the Space Jam 2 trailer was her spectacular strikes on the court docket.
2 Gossamer
Of the 15 confirmed Tunes on the team, only two weren’t on the original roster. One is Granny, while the other is Gossamer, the giant red monster. He was in stands when Monstars faced Tune Squad in first film. But now through the trailer of the film, we can tell that he’ll actually be taking part in the game this time around. It’s possible that his size will give them an advantage in certain situations.
3 Lola Bunny
Lola Bunny stands out as a character original to Space Jam. She was utilized as a love interest to Bugs and a player with skills that far exceeded the other Tunes in the first film, before her appearances in Tunes. With a much-needed less-sexualized redesign, she stands a chance at once again being a memorable addition to the lineup.
4 Foghorn Leghorn
Foghorn Leghorn, the nosy and talkative rooster who loves tormenting the Barnyard Dawg, was spotted with other Tunes in the trailer. Since his favorite target may not join him on the court, Foghorn may use his classic pranks on the Goon Squad instead.
5 Taz
The Tasmanian Devil, is known for his insatiable hunger and destructive tendencies. Although he didn’t make that much of an impact in the game against the Monstars, but this time, the contest with the Goon Squad in Space Jam 2 can give him a chance to make up for that, and he can also be a great secret weapon for LeBron James.
6 Daffy Duck
Daffy Duck, the second most important Looney Tunes character, is sure to play in the team’s next game. He was one of only three Tunes (the other two being Bugs and Lola) to make it through the game in Space Jam. He has earned his place on Bugs Bunny’s “dream team”.
7 Elmer Fudd
Elmer Fudd took a break from hunting Bugs in Space Jam to suit up as a member of the Tune Squad for Michael Jordan, and will be doing the same with LeBron James’ bunch. Elmer’s performance in the first game revealed that he was more competent at basketball than he ever was at being a hunter.
8 Wile E. Coyote & Roadrunner
Wile E. Coyote, the self-proclaimed genius, has been scheming for decades to get his hands on the elusive Roadrunner. They’re usually shown as enemies, but just seen as in the original film, the two will be serving on the same team in Space Jam 2. With Roadrunner’s speed and Wile E.’s proficiency with explosives, it’s easy to see why Bugs would pick them.
9 Yosemite Sam
Yosemite Sam, one of the two greatest enemies of Bugs Bunny, has been everything from a cowboy, a pirate, a Roman centurion, a spaceman, a soldier in the Confederate Army, and more.
Sam, who literally roped Jordan into the Looney Tunes world in the first film, will be reprising his role on the Tune Squad. Though Sam and Elmer were stripped of their guns for other Looney Tunes projects, the new gun rule won’t keep Sam from sporting his two pistols for his next big-screen outing.
10 Speedy Gonzalez
Speedy Gonzales has been the subject of criticism for years because some feel that he comes with too many racial stereotypes. He doesn’t have a large presence in the trailer, but he was included in a few shots and is confirmed to be a member of the team. It will be good to the Tunes as his speed in the cartoons made him impossible for anyone to catch.
11 Porky Pig
Porky Pig, who made his debut in 1935, is the oldest Looney Tunes character featured in the movie. Porky will appear in Space Jam: A New Legacy to help Tunes. In the trailer, Porky appeared to be quite worried when sizing up the Goon Squad.
12 Sylvester & Tweety
Sylvester and Tweety are the cat-and-mouse duo of the squad. In the trailer, Tweety used karate to take care of the Monstars in one scene, and Sylvester, if not distracted by his hunger for Tweety, was able to score a few crucial baskets in Space Jam. Since both have popped up quite a bit in the marketing, the two could be core members of Bugs Bunny’s squad in Space Jam: A New Legacy.
Whether it is an angry Tweety bird, or Bugs Bunny and Lola Bunny ready to play ball, or even Daffy Duck and Tasmanian Devil joining the crew, the first stills brought with it a load of ‘90s nostalgia.
About Space Jam: A New Legacy (Space Jam 2)
Space Jam: A New Legacy (also known as Space Jam 2) is an upcoming American live-action/animated sports comedy film directed by Malcolm D. Lee, from a screenplay by Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Keenan Coogler, and Terence Nance.
The film is a sequel to Space Jam (1996) and stars basketball player LeBron James, as well as Don Cheadle, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Cedric Joe. The film also features the Looney Tunes characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Marvin the Martian, Pepé Le Pew, Tweety, Sylvester, Foghorn Leghorn, Porky Pig, and Lola Bunny.
Like the previous hybrid films, it will be a combination of live-action and traditional hand drawn 2D animation with some CGI effects
Basketball champion and global icon LeBron James and his young son Dom (Cedric Joe) – who dreams of being a video game developer rather than follow his father’s footsteps – find themselves trapped in Serververse, a virtual space ruled by a rogue A.I. named Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle).
LeBron must save his son and get them home safe by leading Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to win a basketball match against Al-G’s digitized champions on the court, the Goon Squad.
