Frieren recognizes that 10 years is possibly one-tenth of Fern’s life, yet Fern chooses to follow her. They pass through a village where some people have vanished after witnessing the spirits of their deceased relatives. Frieran suspects an Einsam, a creature that uses illusion magic to entice victims.
Attack magic can easily shatter the illusions, but because it entails fighting the ghosts of people they love, even veteran warriors cannot fight back and become their prey. Heiter’s ghost nearly captures Fern, but Frieren easily shoots Himmel’s ghost, revealing the Einsam for Fern to destroy.
Frieren decides to kill a dragon to collect a Grimoire from its nest. They seek to find Stark, one of Eisen’s students who previously defeated the dragon in a staring contest and now resides nearby.
Stark reveals that he has never slain a monster and that he only won the legendary gazing contest because he was paralyzed with fear. Frieren gives him until the next morning to determine whether or not to assist. Fern is skeptical, but Frieran is certain since, because of Eisen’s training, Stark has the strength to cut through solid rock with his axe.

The story starts when a group of heroes come back home after defeating a demon. Frieren, an elf mage, has hundreds of years ahead of her due to her long lifespan.
She is destined to lose all her friends and comrades eventually. However, at the funeral of one of her past comrades, she realizes that she has a new adventure ahead of her.
