3. Episode 1-4 Recap
Himmel the Hero, priest Heiter, dwarf warrior Eisen, and elf mage Frieren return to the royal capital after killing the Demon Lord after a decade. Frieren, whose lifespan spans thousands of years, finds ten years insignificant and decides to travel and gain knowledge.
They observe the Era meteor shower together, with Frieren offering to show them a better viewing location during the next shower in 50 years. Frieren returns 50 years later to find Himmel and Heiter elderly, while Eisen is in his forties.
After rescuing a dragon horn from Himmel, they travel on one more journey to view the meteors. Himmel dies of old age soon after the journey. Frieren realizes at Himmel’s funeral that she never really got to know him and resolves to learn everything she can about humans. She returns 20 years later to discover that Heiter, who is now exceedingly elderly, has adopted a 9-year-old war orphan named Fern.
Frieren tutors Fern for four years while interpreting an ancient Grimoire about immortality. Heiter gets bedridden, and Fern trains relentlessly, wanting Heiter to see her transformation into a mage.
Heiter dies soon after, so Fern joins Frieren on her journey. They come to a statue of Himmel in a particular village, which Frieren is driven to decorate with Blue Moon Weed, a flower from Himmel’s village.
Because it is extinct, they spend 6 months looking for even a single blossom for Frieren to save. They eventually find the blossom in a Seed-Rat nest, allowing Frieren to plant it in Himmel’s memory. Frieren makes a crown for his statue as she remembers a moment when he placed one on her head.
Frieren acknowledges that despite her attempts, she knows nearly nothing about Fern and is trying to come up with a gift for Fern’s birthday. Fern feels relieved that Frieren made an effort to learn about her. Frieren resolves to return to areas she saw with Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen.
The first location is a town where Frieren imprisoned Qual, the Demon of Corruption. Qual is quickly murdered when Frieren casts his spell on him, which he cannot block. Frieren recognizes the village elder as a boy she met in the village 80 years ago who reminds her of Himmel.
Frieren obtains a Grimoire written by famed mage Flamme in exchange for cleaning a beach despite it being a forgery. They then go to Eisen’s house after not seeing him in 30 years.
Flamme, Frieren’s human owner 1000 years ago, advised her to find her home if she ever felt regret and wished to communicate with the dead. Frieren finds Flamme’s true Grimoire, Aureole, which details where all souls go, near the northernmost part of the continent, where the Demon Lord’s fortress is located.
Eisen is pleased that Frieren is learning to care about people and is an excellent teacher to Fern on the trip home. Frieren invites Eisen to accompany them to Aureole, but Eisen declines, claiming that he would slow her down in his old age. On the other hand, Eisen reminds them that their previous journey to the Demon King’s castle took 10 years, which Frieren thinks is a short feat.
