Sony’s Upcoming Xbox Game Pass Competitor to Combine PS Plus & PS Now

Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service has been one of the primary reasons people choose to get an Xbox. The service provides subscribers with access to a massive library of games, including brand-new, day one releases. Now, it seems Sony is ready to respond with their own new service, which is said to be a competitor to Game Pass. And it’s going to be released soon.

According to a new report, Sony could be unveiling their new service “as early as next week.” This is according to a report from Bloomberg, which claims Sony’s Game Pass competitor, known as codename Project Spartacus, will combine PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus, and there will be multiple subscription tiers to choose from.

The games in the service will include newer titles, along with “classics from older PlayStation eras.” No specific list of games was confirmed.

A significant difference was also mentioned between Sony’s upcoming subscription service and Xbox Game Pass: the lack of brand-new, day one releases.

As stated in previous reports, Sony is not planning to offer the big first-party exclusives through its service on day one. Sony’s strategy seems to be to use the classic games as a lure, as they are not readily available on modern platforms.

While fans are curious about how this new service will work, we will have to wait till next week to see if Sony reveals anything. The report does not provide names of specific games that will be available through the service, and it also doesn’t mention any pricing.

However, given it is a competitor to Game Pass, it stands to reason the prices should not be vastly different. Currently, Xbox Game Pass, which offers PC Game Pass and vanilla Xbox Game Pass at $9.99 per month each, while the more robust Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription comes in at $14.99 per month.

Going by the report’s contents, it seems Project Spartacus will be similar to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, giving PlayStation users the most bang for their buck. By clubbing PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus benefits and adding classic games coming to the service, Sony’s new subscription service could be very appealing to fans.

Combining the two services also makes a lot of sense, and it will be interesting to see what the full scope of the new service encompasses. If the reveal does happen next week, fans will have to choose whether they jump to the new service or not.
