Olivia Wilde’s MCU Secret Project Is About Spider-Woman Jessica Drew

Sony’s upcoming Spider-Woman will be following comic’s original Spider-Woman Jessica Drew. The Marvel film, previously reported as a ‘secret’ project, will be directed by Olivia Wilde. There were rumors about which female character Sony would pick, with fans strongly believing it was going to be Spider-Woman.

Deadline first reported that Actor-turned-Director, Olivia Wilde would be developing and directing a Marvel film focusing on a female character back in August 2020. Wilde made her directorial debut with Booksmart and is currently filming Don’t Worry Darling starring Harry Styles. The report had also revealed that the film will be produced by Amy Pascal and written by Katie Silberman.

Now, The Illuminerdi has exclusively reported the exciting new detail about the project. According to their sources, the film will follow Jessica Drew’s origin story, including her memory loss in the comics. Although, the film will deviate a bit from the original story as it will not be tied to Hydra, unlike in the comics.

Casting details reveal that they are supposedly looking to cast a 25-35-year-old actress, meaning that Jessica awakens as an adult instead of a teenager, or it could be set years after she first wakes from the genetic accelerator that her father put her in.

Spider-Woman, aka Jessica Drew is a fictional character appearing in Marvel Comics. The character first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #32, and 50 issues of the Spider-Woman series followed. Other versions of Spider-Woman include Julia Carpenter, Gwen Stacy, and Mary Jane Watson, but the first Spider-Woman, introduced in 1978, was Jessica Drew.

Unlike the usual ‘bitten by a radioactive spider’ version, Jessica Drew’s origin story defers a bit. Her father, Jonathan Drew, found large amounts of uranium in their property and kept working on controversial studies of evolution, genetics, and cell regeneration.

But Jessica’s long-time exposure to the uranium made her ill. Jonathan injected Jessica with an untested serum made with the blood of several uncommon species of spiders in the hopes of stopping the tissue damage and immunizing the girl from the uranium radiation in her blood.

He sealed Jessica in a genetic accelerator where she was kept in stasis for decades, as the serum needed to be incubated, where her age was decelerated. When Jessica awoke decades later, she was only 17 years old.

Jessica’s powers include wall-crawling, superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, venom blasts, controlled discharges of bio-electricity. Jessica Drew has an interesting comic book history, including being brainwashed by Hydra, working as a bounty hunter, private investigator, becoming a New Avenger, and much more.

Sony has been building up their Sony Marvel Universe using the Marvel characters they own. The first extension in the franchise was Venom (2018), which got a sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, slated for a release on September 17, 2021. Other new films in development include Morbius, Kraven The Hunter, and Spider-Woman.
