Sony’s Morbius starring Jared Leto was released on April 1, 2022, following a two-year delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jared Leto plays a doctor with a rare blood disorder who turns into a vampire while searching for a cure while Matt Smith plays his best friend, who later becomes the villain of the movie.
The film was a critical and commercial failure, grossing just $73 million domestically against a reported budget of $75-83 million, although globally, it grossed $163.3 million.
Despite the negative reception, it became a hit on the internet thanks to memes making fun of the film, with the phrase “It’s Morbin time”, a spoof of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ “It’s morphin time!” becoming a viral meme.
Following the bizarre popularity of the movie online, Sony has decided to re-release Morbius in over 1000 theaters from June 3.
For twelve hours, Morbius was streamed for free on Twitch, and it has since been released on home video. As a result of these ironic memes, Morbius 2 began trending online, and some hope that in the near future a sequel will be produced.
YouTuber and comedian Eddy Burback, posted a video on his channel in which he announces that he plans to see Morbius five times in a row while wearing a Party City Dracula cape and fangs.
His video which hilariously breaks down the movie has gained over 1.6 million views. Check out the video below!
Given the bizarre internet popularity, Morbius is now being re-released in theaters as Sony attempts to capitalize on the online meme sensation. Morbius will be rereleased in over 1,000 theaters starting June 3, 2022, according to Comicbook.
This re-release of Morbius comes after a slow weekend at the box office, with only David Cronenberg’s Crime of the Future in limited release and the IFC Midnight film Watcher being significant releases.
Sony’s decision to release Morbius may raise eyebrows considering that online memes and buzz do not necessarily translate into box office, as was the case with Snakes on a Plane in 2006.
This was probably an attempt for Morbius to earn a couple of million dollars more which would allow it to at least claim its budget back at the box office.
While it is unclear if Sony will release a sequel to Morbius, the sheer amount of memes about Morbius, whether ironic or not, is sure to catch Sony’s attention, and it is possible that the character may return as a supporting character in another film.
As for the current re-release, it is safe to assure that Morbius isn’t likely to overtake Top Gun: Maverick at the box office this weekend.
