PlayStation 5 Shortage Could Go on Till May 2022 Says Sony

For those hoping for the PlayStation 5 shortage to end any time soon, it looks like you’re out of luck. Coming straight from Sony, we may be facing this shortage till May of 2022.

Sony has reportedly told a group of analysts that it might be 2022 before the PlayStation 5 supply issue is dealt with. The company’s April financial reports showed that Sony sold 7.8 million units as of March 31st, and its target for the fiscal year being 14.8 million units. The target had been agreed upon to keep the sales pattern of the PS4, which has sold 115.9 million units to this day.

I don’t think demand is calming down this year, and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand.

Hiroki Totoki, Chief Financial Officer, Sony

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and the global semiconductor shortage, the company is finding it challenging to keep up with the explosive rate that the PS4 had sold. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world, along with other giants such as Continental AG, Renesas Electronics Corp., and Foxconn Technology Group, have all warned that the shortage may last much longer than expected, stating that it may even be 2023 before supplies start to normalize.

Hiroki Totoki has told the analysts that Sony will be doing everything within its powers to boost production and get consoles on the shelves as soon as possible. To an analyst who asked if the company was unable to leverage the home entertainment surge due to the pandemic, the CFO responded with, “We have sold more than 100 million units of the PlayStation 4, and considering our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine demand dropping easily.”

However, a report stated that PlayStation Network’s monthly active users dropped from 114 million in the previous quarter to 109 million.

It should be noted that it is not just Sony having problems making their consoles due to the shortages of resources. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa also admitted that the company had been unable to meet the desired production target for the Switch. It looks like we’re in this wait for the long haul.
