In yet another instance of a week-long push of release date, the Venom sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage has been moved from September 17 to September 24. With the move, Sony Pictures has Venom 2 following the trend set by Godzilla vs. Kong and Mortal Kombat.
The list of films getting the COVID-19 release date changes is long, especially those moved by just one week. Godzilla vs. Kong was set to premiere on March 26 but was delayed five days to March 31. Warner Bros. recently delayed the release of Mortal Kombat by one week to April 23. The delays have been coming right after the rollout of vaccines across the country, letting more and more theaters reopen as restrictions are relaxed.
Meanwhile, Venom fans are not surprised considering this is the movie’s third delay. Originally set for release in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced Sony to push the release to 2021. June 25, 2021, was set as the new release date until Universal Studios delayed F9 to the same date. Sony then moved Venom 2 back to September 17, 2021. Now, Sony has delayed the film by another week to September 24, 2021.
In the absence of a streaming service of its own, Sony has been particularly keen on delaying its movies for theatrical releases ever since the start of COVID. Sony delayed its entire 2020 slate into 2021 and has shuffled the release date of a number of their films. Morbius, the other film spinning off of a classic Spider-Man villain, was moved from March 2021 to October 2021, and less than a day later, to January 2022.
Sony still has Spider-Man: No Way Home slated for December 17, 2021. The fact that despite delays, Venom 2 is definitely coming before the new Spider-Man movie, might hint at a connection between the two films.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is the second film in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. The movie will see Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) going face to face with his most iconic villain, Carnage (Woody Harrelson). We know that Carnage will be joined by another villain, Shriek (Naomie Harris), but about all we know.
Venom 2 will now hit the theatres with the adaptation of the hit musical Dear Evan Hansen and The Sopranos prequel, The Many Saints of Newark on September 24. At the same time, its late September release date ensures that Venom 2 will get ample space between other big names like James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad out on August 6 and Denis Villeneuve’s long-awaited Dune coming on October 1.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is an upcoming American superhero film directed by Andy Serkis. A sequel to 2018’s Venom, it is based on the Marvel Character of the same name. Tom Hardy will be reprising his role as journalist Eddie Brock/ Venom and newcomer Woody Harrelson will play psychotic serial killer Cletus Kasady/ Carnage, in the second installment. Further cast includes Michelle Williams, Reid Scott, and Naomie Harris.
Venom ended with the symbiote destroying Carlton Drake, the symbiote Riot, and the Life Foundation’s spaceship. Thus the world was saved. In a mid-credits scene, Brock was invited to interview incarcerated serial killer Cletus Kasady, who promised “carnage” when he escaped. This was Woody Harrelson’s Carnage reference.
