Sony PS5 Is the Fastest-Selling Hardware Platform in US History

Despite facing stock issues, Sony has still managed to sell a high number of PlayStation 5 consoles. Especially in the US, people have bought so many PS5s that the next-gen console is now the fastest-selling console in US history.

The report was out by Mat Piscatella, an analyst from NPD Group, who tweeted that the PS5 is “currently the fastest-selling hardware platform” in US history. Nintendo Wii previously held this record. It must be noted that this data does not represent the number of units sold but total dollar sales.

With the pandemic making people remain indoors, it’s normal for the demand for next-gen consoles to rise. Add the spectacular features that these consoles sport; enthusiasts would obviously go all out to get them.

Piscatella revealed that consumer spending across the video game industry has brought in $9.3 billion so far this year.

Piscatella did not disclose the exact figure that PS5 generated. However, we do know that Sony shipped a massive total of 4.5 million units in 2020.

Moreover, Starting this month, Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki expects Sony to sell 14.8 million units this fiscal year.

The NPD report also disclosed that PS5 was the second best-selling console in February 2021. The first position was snatched away from Sony by another giant, Nintendo Switch.

For not topping the list, Sony should blame Super Mario 3D World that prompted gamers to turn their attention to Nintendo’s portable console.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury was the best-selling game of February 2021. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War took the second position while Persona 5 Strikers stood third.

However, don’t expect Sony to remain a runner-up. PS5 is currently facing a shortage of AMD chipsets. The issue is expected to be resolved by the later part of this year. When such constraints are no more, expect the next-gen console to fulfill its true potential.
