The Apple vs. Epic games lawsuit is bringing a lot of new things to light. Several documents with unknown information have surfaced during the trial process, and the latest one may be the biggest too. It seems as if Epic Games was trying to get PlayStation Exclusives onto their online storefront.
The latest documents details a proposal that would see Sony’s first-party games, available only for the PlayStation Consoles, make their way onto the Epic Games Store for PC. The document states, “Offer extended at $200M MG+ for 4-6 titles.”
No information was divulged on which exclusives would be part of the deal, but it is highly doubtful Sony would agree for its most recent games to be included. More than likely, the proposal was for some PS4 exclusives. The next pointer stated, “awaiting feedback,” which means this conversation might not have continued.
The document also suggests that Epic Games also approached Microsoft and Nintendo with similar propositions. While Nintendo was a complete “non-starter,” Microsoft did begin conversations regarding this matter. Internal feedback from Microsoft states that Xbox Game Pass for PC would be a competitor to what Epic aims to achieve and that the two companies were bidding against each other for content.
The final pointer in the Microsoft segment states that Xbox head Phil Spencer has been meeting with Valve head Gabe Newell for discussions of an unknown nature.
Sony exclusives have appeared on PC before, such as ReadySet Heroes and Predator: Hunting Grounds, which came exclusively on Epic Games Store. Horizon: Zero Dawn also appeared on PC but was available through both Epic and Steam. A PC release of Days Gone is also coming soon.
An additional document revealed that Microsoft would move to an 88/12 revenue share for games sold on Xbox consoles during the first half of 2021; this change should kick in by June. This conclusion must be pretty recent as a Microsoft spokesperson recently told The Verge, “We have no plans to change the revenue share for console games at this time.”
