Some movies just can’t catch a break. Right when it felt like the box office was recovering, Morbius has decided to play it safe and delay its release to April 1, 2022.
I believe there are two factors that have played a role in this decision.
After several delays from its 2020 timeline, Morbius had settled on being released on January 28, 2022. However, Spider-Man: No Way Home doing exceptionally and showing no signs of stopping could also have a negative impact on Morbius scheduled so close to it, even though they share the same Sony universe.
Second, there has been a recent surge of COVID-19 cases due to the Omicron variant. While there are no huge lockdowns in place yet, some restrictions could come into effect by the end of the month, once again affecting Morbius’s release.
The new release date comes with its upside—the first week of April does not have any major releases other than Morbius. The big names scheduled are Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore on April 8, in the second week.
As Sony’s Spider-Man NWH and Venom 2 were box office successes, it is only fitting that they do their best and ensure Morbius is received in a similar manner. Hopefully, this is the last delay Morbius faces.
Going by the recently released trailer, Morbius shows promising value with Jared Leto making his debut as the titular vampiric antihero.
Morbius uses an offbeat and dangerous method to cure himself of a rare blood disease. He is restored to health, stronger than ever with added supernatural abilities. But things go south when he is unable to control his urges or vampiric instincts.
In the trailer, Morbius has already made a cheeky reference to Venom. With Sony’s superhero universe growing once again, it will be interesting to see Morbius’ place in it!
