In its latest integrated financial report, Sega Sammy Group revealed that the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has surpassed a cumulative total of 1.5 billion units in sales and downloads in the 2022 fiscal year.
This number consists of sales of both full games and downloads of free-to-play titles.
The report, which was released on October 28, 2022 covered all that was released from March 2021 till the end of March 2022.
The report also included the sales milestones of other in-house IPs from the company, such as Yakuza/Ryu ga Gotoku (19.8 million), Sakura Wars (5.8 million), Chain Chronicle (25 million), Virtua Fighter (18.8 million), and Phantasy Star (9 million).
The numbers for Sakura Wars, Virtue Fighter and Chain Chronicle include free-to-play downloads.
The section of the report that talks about the acquired IPs showed that the Shin Megami Tensei franchise will have sold 19 million units, whereas the Persona franchise will have sold 15.5 million units. The Persona 5 game series alone has sold 7.22 million copies worldwide.
The report claims an increase of approximately 130 million units in sales from the previous fiscal year, with a reported 1.4 million sales forecasted for 2023 for the Sonic game series. Additionally, the report noted some strategies that will increase IP growth and build on its appeal worldwide.
Sega states that creating a “super game” is one of its primary long-term strategies, which it hopes to achieve by the end of the fiscal year in March 2026. The company describes a super game as a “large-scale global title” that “attracts far more active users than any of the group’s games to date.”
Following the release of the Sonic movies, Sega will now be moving on to collaborations with other popular games and licensing in areas such as toys and merchandise. A few popular games that Sonic has collaborated with thus far are Minecraft, Roblox, and Fall Guys.
Sega is also releasing a mix of media for the Sonic series with the upcoming Sonic Prime animated show and the launch of Sonic Frontiers.
Sonic Frontiers will launch for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on November 8, 2022.
