The Jeju Island Arc in Solo Leveling is one of the most intense and tragic arcs of the series, giving us a good look at the amount of danger the S-rank hunters were in, in the face of the overwhelming power of the Ant King. The joint raid between South Korean and Japanese hunters was meant to reclaim Jeju Island, but it quickly turned into a massacre. Here is a list of all the hunters that lost their lives on the mission.
This article contains spoilers for the Solo Leveling manhwa.
The Fallen Hunters of the Jeju Island Raid
1 Goto Ryuji (Japan)

As Japan’s strongest hunter, Goto Ryuji was full of confidence, believing himself nearly invincible. However, his arrogance led him to underestimate the true threat of the Ant King. In a shocking turn of events, he was swiftly overpowered and beheaded, marking the end of Japan’s greatest hunter and leaving his country in a state of devastation.
2 Mari Ishida (Japan)

A member of Alpha Team, Mari was a formidable fighter but still stood no chance against the Ant King’s sheer speed and brutality. She was one of the first to fall, decapitated before she could even mount a defense.
3 Ippei Izawa (Japan)

As an assassin-type hunter, Ippei specialized in speed and stealth. Unfortunately, against the overwhelming power of the Ant King, his agility was meaningless. He was killed almost instantly, unable to even comprehend the danger before him.
4 Kei (Japan)

A skilled mage with heightened senses, Kei attempted to fight using his ice magic. However, his spells barely affected the Ant King, and before he could retreat, he was struck down in the blink of an eye.
5 Akari Shimizu (Japan)

One of Japan’s rare S-rank healers, Akari was an important asset to the team. Sadly, her healing abilities were of no use when faced with the overwhelming force of the Ant King, who swiftly beheaded her before she could support her comrades.
6 Kenzo Tanaka (Japan)

Reckless and aggressive, Kenzo often charged headfirst into battles. His bravery, however, was his downfall, as his raw strength was no match for the Ant King. He was swiftly defeated, leaving his team further weakened.
7 Tatsumi Fujishima (Japan)

A member of Team Charlie, Tatsumi barely had time to react before his life was taken. He was among the many hunters who were slaughtered in mere moments, unable to put up a fight against the monstrous creature.
8 Min Byung-Gu (South Korea)

The only South Korean hunter to fall, Min Byung-Gu was a cherished S-rank healer. Despite his initial hesitation to join the raid, he bravely stepped forward to heal his allies in their time of need. His selflessness, however, made him a prime target for the Ant King, who devoured him to inherit his healing powers. His death was not in vain, as his courage bought time for his comrades to survive.
The Survivors of the Jeju Island Raid
Despite the tragedy, some hunters managed to make it out alive. Among the South Korean hunters, Choi Jong-In, Cha Hae-In, Baek Yoonho, Lim Tae-Gyu, and Ma Dongwook survived, largely due to Sung Jinwoo’s intervention. On the Japanese side, Minoru Hoshino, Kanae Tawata, and Atsushi Kumamoto barely escaped, though their guild suffered near-total annihilation.
Jeju Island Aftermath and Jinwoo’s Legacy

Following the raid, Sung Jinwoo emerged as the ultimate hero, single-handedly defeating the Ant King and claiming Jeju Island back for South Korea. His insane display of power got the entire world’s eye on him, particularly from the United States, who sought to recruit him. However, South Korea was determined to keep their strongest hunter within their ranks.
Jinwoo also extracted the Ant King’s shadow, renaming him Beru, turning him into one of his most powerful summons. Additionally, he briefly resurrected Min Byung-Gu to heal Cha Hae-In before granting him eternal rest, honoring his final wishes.
Conclusion
The Jeju Island Arc served as a harsh reminder that even S-rank hunters are not invincible. While South Korea mourned the loss of their legendary healer, Japan was left reeling from the near-total loss of its elite hunters. The battle changed the course of history, solidifying Sung Jinwoo’s place as the strongest hunter and shifting the power dynamics of the world.
