Justice League director Zack Snyder revealed the existence of an alternate scene featuring Joker in a black and white version of the film in a recent interview. The Snyder Cut is a modified (adhering to the original cut) and lengthier version of 2017’s Justice League.
It follows the titular band of superheroes uniting to fight the evil forces of Darkseid and Steppenwolf. Presently, the original cut has received positive reviews, but some skepticism remains about the movie’s four-hour duration.
The original Justice League suffered through a difficult production. Snyder, who was directing it, had to step down following a personal tragedy.
His exit led Warner Bros. to hire “Avengers” director Joss Whedon who made major changes to the script and ordered many reshoots, transforming the earlier vision completely. The end product was heavily criticized, spurring fans, cast, and crew to petition for the release of what they called the “Snyder Cut,” director Zack Snyder’s original vision. Ultimately Warner Bros. gave it the green signal allowing for the movie’s release.
In a YouTube chat with Wonder Meg, Snyder revealed that an extended scene featuring Jared Leto’s Joker was indeed shot for the black and white version of the film. During the interview, the YouTuber asked Snyder about Joker’s infamous “We live in a society” line from the trailer.
Following the question of whether the scene preceded a moment cut out from the film, Snyder said he had shot a version of it “for the charity version of the movie.” He further noted that “there’s a second ending of the movie, of the Jared Leto scene, just slightly different.”
The director also shared his reasons for excluding the full scene from the movie, stating that Leto’s improvisation led to a frosty and undismayed portrayal of the Joker. In the end, though, he chose to go ahead with an emotional reveal-all of the franchise’s iconic villain.
As the Snyder Cut prepares for its much-awaited, expectant release, it will sure be interesting to see the product of a long-awaited and fought-for oeuvre.
