The first official trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is finally here, and it gives a look into the upcoming reboot. Starring Crazy Rich Asians actor Henry Golding as the titular character, he is joined by Andrew Koji, Haruka Abe, Iko Uwais, Peter Mensah, Samara Weaving, Takehiro Hira, and Ursula Corbero.
Nearing its July 23 release date, the movie’s promotions have already begun and today marked the release of its first official trailer. Shortly released by Paramount Pictures, the footage is nothing short of being action-filled, featuring old friends and foes while revealing the origin story of Snake Eyes.
There’s also an additional look at the end, showing the ninja’s upgraded live-action combat suit, which seems like a nearly accurate adaptation of the character’s old cartoon ensemble. Check out the trailer here:
The tense relationship between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow has always been central to both of their narratives, and the new trailer does an excellent job of shedding enough light on the unique establishment of their bond and shared history. Since Storm Shadow’s known to shift allegiances with every new movie, it will be interesting to see whether his interests lead him to join Cobra in the upcoming reboot.
Although a climactic duel between the two seems inevitable, it’s possible something or the other may set them apart. While the Baroness mainly represents Cobra’s appearance in the trailer, it remains unclear what their mission is or what will lead them to be at odds with Snake Eyes.
Ahead of the trailer release Paramount Pictures also shared a new poster for Snake Eyes. Check it out here:
But if the movie attempts to set up a brand new G.I. Joe franchise, it would prove better to sprinkle in setups for other villains such as Cobra Commander. Even then, the compact and focused story seems like a smart move, putting all the attention on a singular character.
This tactic could spell success in the interest of the core plot as it might be best, for now, to keep the more prominent G.I. Joe characters out of the frame. Following the negative critical receptions to 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the franchise took a much-needed hiatus.
But with the Snake Eyes reboot set to release this summer, the series might just take a different turn, hopefully for the best.
