Tormund Giantsbane will be a part of a show about a group of people living in harsh environmental conditions – but no, these people don’t go by Free Folks. The Smithsonian Channel has ordered a living history adventure series/ reality show called Ultimate Viking and Game of Thrones actor Kristofer Hivju and his wife, journalist and factual TV presenter Gry Molvær Hivju have been cast as the hosts of the show.
Based on the history of the 1000-year-old seafaring warriors, Ultimate Viking will test the participants – a group of modern-day men and women, to see if they have the knowledge and skills to survive like a Viking.
The tasks will be rooted in historical facts, archaeological evidence, and saga literature. The participants will have to compete against each other in a series of extreme Viking expeditions in the Nordic conditions as a camera crew records them.
The show has not finalized a cast for the first season. Filming will take place in parts of the UK and Norway, with a custom Viking settlement being constructed on the Norwegian coast for the show. A one-hour documentary will be included with the eight-part series.
Prepare to see a lot of axe-swinging and sail-boating in the new year!
Smithsonian has not announced the official premiere date for Ultimate Viking yet.
