After the success of Virgin River, Netflix has its bets on yet another romantic drama based on a novel series — Sweet Magnolias.
The 11-part book series was a massive bestseller with its warm small-town vibe and loyal friendships, with each part following the story arc of one town character.
If the series retain this format remains to be soon on May 19 when it premieres.
Penned by the New York Times bestselling author Sherryl Woods, Sweet Magnolias is based in Serenity, South Carolina. From the brief glimpse, we got off the show from What’s New in May 2020 video by Netflix, at least the first episode follows the first part of the book series.
Front & Behind the Camera
Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) is a Serenity native who is going through a rough patch in her life.
However, she is seen surrounded by her two wannabe entrepreneur friends, Dana Sue, and Helen, who together want to open a spa for local women. While Heather Headley features as Helen Decatur, Brooke Elliott plays Dana Sue Sullivan.
Another popular name associated with the show is Jamie Lynn Spears in what is her first acting gig since her Nickelodeon days. Spears is playing a very pregnant and very charming Noreen Fitzgibbons.
Fans may also recognize Brooke Elliott from the Lifetime series Drop Dead Diva; Heather Headley from the Chicago Med’s Gwen Garrett, Chris Klein (Cal Maddox) from the American Pie franchise, and Justin Bruening from a guest spot on Grey’s Anatomy.
Author Sherryl Woods is the executive producer on the series along with Sheryl J. Anderson, who also serves as the showrunner. Dan Paulson, whose Daniel L. Paulson Productions is producing the show, also serves as an executive producer.

Expected Plotline
In the novel series, the story begins with Maddie Townsend’s near-perfect life coming apart.
The homemaker can’t remember the last time she had had a job and is suddenly responsible for her two teenaged sons and a 6-year-old heartbroken daughter.
Meanwhile, Maddie’s husband is expecting another baby with his girlfriend, and her friends are relying on Maddie to start a women-only spa.
If that wasn’t enough, her son’s baseball coach Cal Maddox is now madly in love with Maddie.
And just like any other small town in the world, Serenity also has no secrets among its residents. The whole town automatically disapproves this unusual match.
However, Cal Maddox may as well be Maddie’s only hope for finding some actual serenity in Serenity!
All-family drama
In an interview with BBSCKids, Logan Allen, who will be playing Kyle Townsend on the show, said that the show is a must-watch since it will appeal to all audiences.
“You can sit down with your parents and grandparents and all enjoy the characters, storylines, comedy, drama, the whole show! It’s truly an amazing, and wholesome family show,” he said.
