The film went on to become a huge commercial and critical success and turned Stallone into a star. The film has had several sequels as well. Stallone’s upcoming documentary will explore his rise and the story behind the making of Rocky.

Sly is set to provide us with many exciting revelations, including the origin story behind Stallone’s character’s name, Rocky Balboa. In an exclusive clip from Sly, Stallone talks about his experience after coming to Los Angeles for the first time in the 1970s. In his early days, the actor used to live in a small apartment in the Valley by Balboa Boulevard. While writing Rocky, Stallone was inspired by the name of the street where he once lived.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, director Thom Zimny talked about Stallone’s inspiration behind naming his character Rocky Balboa. Read the quote here:

This story perfectly encapsulated the same themes I observed in Stallone’s early days, which remain relevant today: self-belief, the power of dreams and ambitions, the inherent beauty of making mistakes, and the serendipitous moments of being in the right place at the right time. Sly had a knack for seeing the world as a source of creative inspiration despite the circumstances. Another great example of this was his choice to name a character after Balboa Boulevard, the street where he had a dingy, modest apartment. Stallone had such a talent for finding creative inspiration in the world around him.

Before Stallone’s breakthrough moment with Rocky, the actor struggled in Hollywood for years and faced multiple rejections from producers. Stallone led a life of extreme poverty and financial constraints. He was even homeless for a while. Stallone’s struggles while trying to make a name for himself are what inspired him to create Rocky, who also faces financial instability and several hardships.

The underdog mentality, the most prominent theme of Rocky, is inspired by Stallone’s grit and determination and his refusal to give up on his dreams. Finally, his hard work paid off, and he shot to fame with Rocky.

Zimny’s upcoming documentary, Sly, is set to explore Stallone’s five-decade-long career, successes, and failures, along with his early days of struggle in Hollywood. Other than Rocky, Stallone went on to star in several iconic franchises, including Rambo and The Expendables. The idea is to narrate Stallone’s real-life story so it can inspire many others who refuse to give up on their dreams.
