Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, or more commonly known as Maoujo de Oyasumi in the fandom, is a manga written by Kagiji Kumanomata.
The Princess, who just wants to get some shut-eye at the monsters’ expense, is supposed to be the bait and hostage of the poor Demon Lord.
The beloved story of fellow nappers is about to come to life on screen this October.

But would a fantasy anime about sleeping be popular among the general audience? Wouldn’t that be too bland?
2. Theory Section
There is a difference between a ‘damsel in distress’ princess and a ‘give me a bed to sleep’ princess.
Let’s get into this article to see what will influence the making of ‘Maoujo de Oyasumi.’
I. Popularity of the Manga
Maoujo de Oyasumi started serializing in 2016, and to date, it has released 14 takobon volumes.
Viz Media licensed the series in 2017 and started publishing the English translated volumes.
The popularity of the franchise is a given if it gets an anime just four years later. Let’s hear from the fans themselves why they like the series.
II. Fan Reviews on the Manga
The synopsis of the manga is true and hides the truth at the same time. This series may be about a sleepy princess, but it also showcases the hardships the demon kidnappers go through to keep a hostage locked up.
As readers, you might be interested to know that Syalis or Suya is not a typical captured princess; she doesn’t concern herself about the mess she creates or the demons she tears open.
Her only priority is a bed, her pillows, and a good rest (the hero, on the other hand, requires more rescuing than needed).
The fans love this unique idea, which is very different from the usual cliched fantasy stories. It is packed with funny references and definitely will make you laugh a lot.
The story manages to add in new details and plot points in every chapter as the absurdity increases, but never overcomplicates it.
The relationship between the demons and Suya is interesting to note. The series is warm, funny, and hearty, at least until you ignore all the torturing Suya enforces on her capturers.
But is it alright for Doga Kobo to release the anime this year??
3. Production Issues
Doga Kobo is a well-known studio with many famous anime under its banner. But this year alone, it has released three anime with two more for 2020, and two for next year!!
Doga Kobo still has Ikebukuro West Gate Park slated for this year along with Maoujo de Oyasumi, when it announced that My Senpai is Annoying will be getting an anime for the next year.
Hopefully, the studio doesn’t crash and burn with such a full plate. Let’s move on to discuss the cute plot about our princess.
4. Expected Plot
Tragedy has struck the human kingdom of Goodereste, for the vile Demon King has captured their beloved princess.
He has declared that he will only return her if the humans surrender the world to him.
“What evils will Princess Aurora Syalis Goodereste have to face while she waits for a brave and strong hero to rescue her?“
Is what the humans wonder, but the princess is more concerned with finding a nice place to get a good night’s rest, and woe to anyone who gets in her way.
While ‘waiting’ for the knight in shining armor to appear, the imprisoned princess makes her way through the castle looking for entertainment, as her dungeon cell is boring.
Thus, she decides to wile her time away by sleeping. The only problems and hurdles she must face is: insomnia and finding a good bed.
Why don’t we take a look at the supposed demons of the world and Suya?
5. Visuals & Trailers
The official website revealed a key visual, character designs and the trailer
for the anime.
The PV revealed new cast members and that the broadcast would start from October 2020.
The trailer sets up the fantasy world for Maoujo de Oyasumi by revealing the main and recurring characters of the series.
It has fantasy music playing in the background which is quite refreshing (the kind you hear in theme parks).
The video starts with the introduction of the princess and how she gets to Demon Castle, and the reason why she wants to sleep is revealed.
The scenes reveal the other main characters, the Demon Lord and the Demon Cleric, along with the teddy bear monsters, whom Suya threatens with a knife.
A trailer was also revealed giving us a glimpse of the anime’s opening theme song, “Kaimin! Anmin! Syalist Seikatsu” by Inori Minase as her character.
With such a wonderful plot, let’s discuss the art, visuals, and the OSTs in detail below.
6. Music and Animation
I. Animation Quality
Doga Kobo has done an excellent job of bringing out the details of the characters.
We can see how future interactions will be filled with comedy through bickering and the on-the-spot situations between all the characters.
The art is good and looks very fantastical. The characters all have unique features that are contrasted beautifully against the backdrop.
Like Suya, who looks like a fairy with fair hair and skin, has a spotlight on her all the time in the gloomy and dark Demon Castle.
II. Theme Songs
ORESAMA will perform the ending song of the anime. They also did a theme song in Okami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji.
7. Fan Expectations
The news of the anime adaptation excited the fans on the forum for the best/worst princess ever in the fantasy genre.
The cast and staff seem to have already worked together in a few other anime. So, the chemistry of characters would be brought up by a notch or two with these skilled voice actors.
The manga readers are excited to see the hilarious situations like demons rescuing the hero from the brutal princess animated.
The ‘I’m not trapped in here with you, you’re trapped in here with me’ theme piques the viewers’ interest.
There are many wondering if Doga Kobo can do their utmost in recreating the scenes, just as wonderfully, as they did in their imagination. There is a subtle pressure on the cast too.
Let’s look at the other cast and staff for Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle.
