What’s coming in 2021’s Call of Duty has long been under speculation and while the actual content of the game still isn’t confirmed, there are new updates on who the developer will be and when they will drop the game. Publisher Activision has confirmed that Sledgehammer Games will be returning to the franchise and will be developing the next game in the series for a Fall 2021 release.
For years now, Call of Duty has consistently released new titles every year with developers like Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games at the helm. Lately, the series has also seen newer entries like Call of Duty: Warzone launch under its label with free-to-play Battle Royales and many other features.
The development was announced during Activision’s Q1 earnings call, where it was also shared that the game will have an impact on the aforementioned Warzone.
“We are very excited for this year’s premium Call of Duty release,” Activision president Dan Alegre said. “Development is being led by Sledgehammer Games. The game is looking great and on track for its Fall 2021 release.”
Alegre neglected to mention any story details about the game but did state that the new title will come updated for a next-generation experience and will launch with campaign, multiplayer, and co-op modes.
Sledgehammer corroborated the news with a comical tweet which you can see above. However, Sledgehammer’s involvement might just be a confirmation of the long-debated rumour that the Call of Duty 2021 will be set in World War 2 and titled Call of Duty WWII: Vanguard.
This is so because Sledgehammer’s last entry in the series was 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII. Sledgehammer’s previous experience with the setting makes them a perfect candidate to develop a game that takes us all back to the historic war that changed the world.
If Call of Duty is indeed on track to come out this Fall, then it is likely that we will get a glimpse of it at the upcoming (and now digital) gaming conferences like E3 and Summer Games Fest. It will also be interesting to see if Call of Duty will bring WW2 weapons to Battle Royale and how they will go about integrating them into the popular mode.
One of the biggest confirmations missing at the moment is that of the title. So, hopefully, we will get to hear something on that front as well along with a peek at if/how the game will incorporate the series’ new engine which was kicked off with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
