The school festival preparations take their toll on Shima and Mitsumi in episode 10 of Skip and Loafer, titled “Scrambling and Dripping.”

Mitsumi’s class eventually settled on doing a play for the festival, and they decided on “The Family Singers,” a timely musical that has been popular among the people for many years now. Shima is also cast in the play, but it is not entirely his sole decision.

Even though he thought his acting days were behind him and openly rejected all interest in it during high school, he was eventually peer pressured into playing the farmer since he felt it was a responsibility he owed to the people in his class.

3. Recap of Episode 10

The school festival is one of the most significant events in town and easily the best in their school. Their class is assigned to do a play, and they decide on “The Family Singers,” a musical that has been popular for many years and is still loved.

Shima is peer pressured into performing alongside everyone in the play, and he realizes his mistake while talking to Chris, one of his closest friends. The whole school comes together to make the festival successful, and everything is planned correctly.

The directors cast the leading roles, and Shima plays a lowly farmer with a forbidden love affair with Kinomoto, who plays the family’s daughter. Since she already has a boyfriend, there was no backlash from the other girls in casting her as the love interest in the play.

Mitsumi tries to weigh in wherever help is needed since she wants to stay active and take on more responsibilities. Shima sees her take on so much work and asks if she wants to take a break, but she continues to go further beyond and put in her maximum effort staying up nights.

She arrived the following day exceptionally late for the meeting, couldn’t watch the rehearsal video, gave her ideas, and apologized profusely. Watching it during her lunch break, Shima sees her running to the directors like a small child and remembers his childhood. During his child actor days, Shima had been equally excited about all of his roles and had the support of his mother.

In his role in the play, Johan had joined the fascists enticed by a man he respected and at the end, he runs from everything, crushed by guilt; Shima relates to this.

Mitsumi overhears Asano talking about her behind her back, and Shima checks in on her and takes her for a drink. Remembering everything he had told her about not wanting to be an actor anymore, she realizes the pressure he was under and partly takes the guilt for it and starts crying.

Shima feels a girl like Mitsumi should be in the mountains, living a carefree life that can’t be hurt by anyone else. He finds this opportunity to take Mitsumi for a dance like Johan took Emilia, his little rose, and brings her spirits back up.

After walking back to class, Mitsumi gives a helpful suggestion to set the stage that would be cheaper and manages to make up for her mistake with Asano. Shima, too, walks back rejuvenated, and life feels a bit brighter.

4. About Skip and Loafer

Skip and Loafer is a manga by Misaki Takamatsu that was launched in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine in August 2018. An anime adaptation is set to premiere in April 2023.

The manga focuses on Mitsumi who is from a backward area in Japan and moves to Tokyo for attending high school. Sosuke is an ikemen and he meets Mitsumi on her first day at the new school. Mitsumi is focused on her career, unaware of what the big city has in store for her.

Sosuke becomes quite fond of her and they become friends. It is a cute high school-based series with light-hearted comedy.
