Simu Liu Shares Exciting Updates on Shang-Chi 2: A Sequel in the Works

MCU’s new superhero, Shang Chi, had a successful debut despite the global pandemic. 

Simu Liu, the actor who portrays him, recently shared some encouraging news about the sequel to the film. Liu’s performance as the iconic Marvel hero has been well-received, and it appears he is just starting his journey.

Although the sequel for Shang-Chi 2 has been given the go-ahead, nothing much has been confirmed for a while now. 

Recently, Liu chatted with Collider, sharing some brief updates about Shang-Chi 2. The actor expressed his enthusiasm for discovering “fresh aspects” of his character. 

Additionally, Liu revealed his wish to see Michelle Yeoh return for Shang-Chi 2.

Going into a sequel feels exciting. It doesn’t necessarily feel like there’s a pressure to perform or a pressure to exceed. It feels like we’ve established a world, and there’s just something really nostalgic and exciting about returning to that world that we’ve spent so much time ideating on and thinking about. And then, we’re getting to revisit some things but also show the viewer new things. We’ll deliver all of the amazing action that we were celebrated for in the first movie, but then also hopefully explore new sides of Shaun’s character and the characters around him. That is, of course, if we can still afford Michelle Yeoh. She’s on top of the world and just the queen of everything.

Apart from Liu, there hasn’t been any official announcement of the cast for Shang-Chi 2 yet. 

However, it is speculated that actors like Awkwafina and Meng’er Zhang will reprise their roles in the sequel. The director of the first movie, Destin Daniel Cretton, is also confirmed to be directing Shang-Chi 2. 

Cretton is under contract with Marvel Studios and is also working on an upcoming Marvel show for Disney+.

It’s been officially announced that there will be a sequel to Shang-Chi, but Marvel Studios hasn’t revealed when it will hit theaters. 

The fifth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is already packed with many upcoming movies and TV shows. So, it’s possible that Shang-Chi 2 might be part of Phase 6, which hasn’t been fully announced yet. 

If it’s not part of Phase 6, we might have to wait until Phase 7 or later for the sequel. 

Director Destin Daniel Cretton is also busy working on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which could be why there hasn’t been much progress on Shang-Chi 2.

Assuming that Shang-Chi 2 gets postponed until Phase 7, it appears likely that the character will have some involvement in Phases 5-6. It will be surprising if Shang-Chi is not included in the two forthcoming Avengers movies. 

As Destin Daniel Cretton has previously worked on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, it is likely that Liu will appear in the film. 

We hope that Marvel Studios will reveal more details about Shang-Chi 2 later this year.
