In One Piece, Devil Fruits grant incredible powers to the ones that obtain it. Devil Fruits’ ability can be anything, from allowing users to control elements to transforming into animals or wielding other superhuman abilities.
However, some Devil Fruits appear remarkably similar and seem to be slightly different versions of the already introduced fruits in One Piece. This creates fascinating dynamics, as it introduces a hierarchy.
1. Devil Fruits with Similar Powers in One Piece
There are multiple Devil Fruits that have been prominent in the story and there have been clear depictions of similarity in their abilities.
1.1 Mera Mera no Mi (Flame-Flame Fruit) vs. Magu Magu no Mi (Magma-Magma Fruit)
The Mera Mera no Mi was originally used by Ace and later inherited by Sabo. The Devil Fruit turns the user into a “Flame Man,” granting control over fire.
In contrast, the Magu Magu no Mi, wielded by Admiral Akainu, transforms the user into a “Magma Man.” Akainu tells Ace that magma surpasses fire and overpowers Ace’s flames, ultimately leading to his death and defeat.
1.2 Yuki Yuki no Mi (Snow-Snow Fruit) vs. Hie Hie no Mi (Ice-Ice Fruit)
Monet wielded the Yuki Yuki no Mi, and it allowed her to control and transform into snow, whereas Aokiji’s similar Hie Hie no Mi grants control over ice.
While both fruits focus on the essence that is cold manipulation, ice is denser and more destructive than snow. Hence it is considered superior.
1.3 Kilo Kilo no Mi (Kilo-Kilo Fruit) vs. Ton Ton no Mi (Ton-Ton Fruit)
The clearest depiction of the difference between similar Devil Fruits can be seen from the comparison of Miss Valentine’s Kilo Kilo no Mi, that lets her adjust her weight from 1 to 10,000 kilograms and Machvise’s Ton Ton no Mi that allows for similar weight control up to multiple tons.
1.4 Bomu Bomu no Mi (Bomb-Bomb Fruit) vs. Pamu Pamu no Mi (Rupture-Rupture Fruit)
Mr. 5’s Bomu Bomu no Mi has the ability to turn parts of his body into explosives, allowing him to detonate his own mucus or breath.
Whereas Gladius’s Pamu Pamu no Mi enables him to similarly blast things around him. The difference being that while Gladius can set off powerful blasts in his surroundings, Mr. 5 can make someone explode from within.
1.5 Moku Moku no Mi (Smoke-Smoke Fruit) vs. Gasu Gasu no Mi (Gas-Gas Fruit)
Smoker’s Moku Moku no Mi has the ability to control smoke, whereas Caesar Clown’s Gasu Gasu no Mi grants broader control over all gases.
Gas can be seen as the larger circle encompassing smoke and it is much more versatile. Caesar’s power is effectively an upgraded version with a much wider usage.
2. Why Are There Similar Devil Fruits?
The existence of similar Devil Fruits in One Piece could be due to two different reasons. First, it emphasizes the idea of a “power hierarchy” within the world, where certain powers hold supremacy.
This hierarchy uses the real-world natural elements to make the fans understand the innate differences- magma is denser than fire, and ice can achieve lower temperatures than snow.
These “superior” and “inferior” fruits can create rivalries like Akainu’s dominance over Ace at Marineford. The defeat wasn’t just a normal defeat, it symbolized the power difference between fire and magma. An innate suppression of abilities.
3. Future Possibilities for Similar Devil Fruits
As One Piece reaches its final arc and all the elements of the story are brought together slowly, we may encounter even more Devil Fruits with overlapping powers. Possibly one similar to Gomu Gomu no Mi.
With the recent focus on advanced Haki and Devil Fruit awakenings, it’s possible that characters with similar fruits could be led to battle each other for supremacy. The awakened versions will increase the magnitude of future battles, especially between similar abilities.
The elusive origins of Devil Fruits might also contribute in shedding light on why these powers overlap. There might be a way to unlock the true potential of each fruit and surpass the innate impression to absorb the Devil Fruits and advance. Anything can happen in the final saga; we can only wait and watch.
