‘The Silence of the Lambs’ Spin-Off Trailer Shows Iconic, Unseen Moments

A fresh trailer for the forthcoming CBS crime drama Clarice (a spin-off of The Silence of the Lambs), which debuted during Super Bowl LV, reveals an iconic moment from the 1991 thriller that’s never been seen on screen.

The new series will pick up from where the famous film ended, with FBI agent Clarice Starling resuming her career in the wake of the adventure with Hannibal Lecter and Wild Bill. The famous role Jodie Foster played in the original film, will now be played by Rebecca Breeds.

Clarice is technically outlined in the same universe as The Silence of the Lambs, but fans of the movie will recognize some major changes when the series releases.

Due to licensing reasons, many plot points and characters from the movie will not be shown. In particular, the movie’s infamous antagonist Hannibal Lecter won’t be spoken of in Clarice. The ownership of The Silence of the Lambs is presently split between MGM and The Dino De Laurentiis Company, which means that aspects included in NBC’s critically-acclaimed series Hannibal won’t be permitted to appear in Clarice.

However, the new show will be dealing heavily with the pedigree of its predecessor, as inferred from the new trailer. The footage, published on YouTube by Rotten Tomatoes TV, exhibits the famous lamb slaughtering scene’s real events, portrayed in great detail by Clarice in one of the most outstanding monologues from The Silence of the Lambs. The new trailer also features Brandi Carlile’s cover of John Denver’s “Country Roads”.

Clarice’s attempt as a girl to save a lamb from the slaughterhouse (an illustrative backstory that sets up much of the angle and the film’s themes) certainly provokes the energy and tone of The Silence of the Lambs. Even the signature moths make an entrance.

“Hannibal Lecter is an incredible character, as is FBI agent Will Graham,”

Alex Kurtzman

“But Clarice Starling has a truly unique amazing psychology, and part of why The Silence of the Lambs was so wonderful is the film puts you so squarely in her shoes, ”

Kurtzman told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview

Clarice has a lot to live up to already, firstly because of the tremendous success of the original film, and secondly because of the high applause Hannibal earned.

The iconic character of Lecter not being on board doesn’t mean that the new show can’t still carve out a niche for itself. Rebecca Breeds comes off as excellent in Agent Starling’s role in Clarice, and the procedural crime drama recipe will enable any number of unique stories to be written into the legend of The Silence of the Lambs.

The official Twitter handle of the series wrote, “Look closely. You’ll get there. Watch the series premiere of #Clarice Thursday, February 11 at 10/9c on CBS and CBS All Access (sic).”

Clarice premieres on CBS on Thursday, February 11.
