Avowed is an exciting first-person fantasy RPG set in the captivating world of Eora. In this game, your decisions are crucial, guiding you through experiences filled with war, intrigue, and ancient mysteries.
A quest called “An Untimely End” begins with a surprising twist when your journey is cut short as you arrive in Paradis’ Administration District after completing the “Message from Afar.” The quest concludes with a crucial encounter with Ygwulf, where you face a key decision: will you choose to kill him or extend your forgiveness?
1. Should you kill or spare Ygwulf in Avowed? An Untimely End Quest

Players can spare Ygwulf as it keeps them aligned with the rebels fighting against the corrupt Steel Garrote.
However, if players want, they can pick a different option. Confronting the assassin, Ygwulf boils down to three major choices, each with a different reward and long-term effects on the story.
2. All the choices involving Ygwulf
2.1 Sparing Ygwulf
You can spare him if you listen to Ygwulf and don’t act aggressively. Upon sparing him, you will receive an adra, 625 coins, and Ygwulf’s Key, which lets you take a shortcut from the cistern.

When you reach the Emerald Stair entrance, Ygwulf’s associate, Stecg, gives you a Writ of Passage. This Writ allows you safe access to resistance areas. The rebels in the Riverside Cave rebel camp in Emerald Stair will thank you for sparing Ygwulf when you visit them. However, you can still betray the rebels here if you want.
2.2 Attacking Ygwulf
If you decide to attack, you will immediately fight with Ygwulf and his assassins. This battle can be challenging, especially if you don’t use a shield or have area-of-effect (AoE) magic.

Once you defeat him, you can loot his body for the following items:
- Ygwulf’s Key,
- Blackwing Armor,
- 48 gold,
- Health potion.
The Blackwing Armor is particularly useful for stealth, as it provides a +30% bonus to stealth attack damage and increases your movement speed by +25% while crouched.
Additionally, instead of receiving the Writ of Safe Passage, you will get the Dissident’s Warning from Stecg, placing you on the rebels’ bad side.
2.3 Forcing Ygwulf to Confess
Ygwulf can be easily convinced to confess to the Steel Garrote, but this is a poor choice. If he confesses, Lodwyn will execute Ygwulf, and in retaliation, the rebels will kill Garryck.
You will receive the Dissident’s Warning when you reach the entrance to Emerald Stair, but you won’t earn a special reward for sparing or killing Ygwulf.
You will get Ygwulf’s Key from him without a fight. However, the Paradisan Rebels you encounter on the street will attack you after you leave. You will receive 1,500 coins at the Embassy, and Inquisitor Lodwyn will be friendlier.
