Hogwarts Legacy is all about choices. What you decide determines the course of the game. There is nothing that is left on chance. Along with making choices during quests, players also pick their own Hogwarts house, wand, and dorm, among other things.
Choosing a dorm is contingent on whether you choose to be a witch or a wizard at the start of the game.
Selecting your house does influence gameplay mechanics, so you’re probably wondering whether gender and dorm selection does that too.
Hogwarts Legacy is designed to be inclusive. The choice between witch and wizard determines only the player character’s dormitory. There is no difference in perks, abilities, and gameplay. All characters in the game also refer to the player with gender-neutral nouns and pronouns.
Witch or Wizard? Character Creation Process in Hogwarts Legacy
There are 6 stages that you have to go through to create your character: Presets (a basic template for your character that you can customize), Facewear, Hairstyles, Complexion, Eyebrows, and Finalise Your Character.
In the final tab – Finalise Your Character, you can choose your character’s dorm – either the wizard dorm (meant for male students) or the witch dorm (meant for female students).
This option is under the Dormitory category, which is the last one you choose from before the final creation of your character. This itself is testament to the fact that the witch or wizard selection isn’t of primary importance.
Every option before it, like choosing the voice tone and pitch for your character, their hairstyle, and their name, does not depend on your selection between wizard and witch.
However, you cannot swap between wizard and witch once you’ve finalized your character.
Gender, House, and Common Rooms in Hogwarts Legacy
Once you have finished customizing your character, you will be taken to the sorting ceremony. Here, the Sorting Hat will ask you some straightforward questions.
If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter series, it will take you no trouble discerning which choice options will lead to which house selection.
[Daring = Gryffindor, Curiosity = Ravenclaw, Loyalty = Hufflepuff, Ambition = Slytherin.]
After the Hat has sorted you, you can change and reselect your house if you’re not happy with your decision.
Once you have been sorted, you will be escorted to your house’s common room. As you probably know, the common room is the common area for all students from the same house, no matter which year – or gender – they belong to.
Depending on whether you have chosen witch or wizard, you will be able to access one of the two dorm rooms. Both dorm rooms look exactly the same; the only difference is that the wizard dorm has male students, and the witch dorm has female students.
Dorms are generally meant for chilling – you hang out there when you don’t have other things to do. All quests take place on the outside. You can interact with objects and characters in the dorm as well as the common room, but nothing more.
Interaction and Dialogue Differences for Witches and Wizards
There are no interaction and dialogue differences for witches and wizards. All non-playable characters use they/them pronouns while referring to your character. Most of the time, you’ll be called “that new fifth-year” or “rookie” or something similar; all nouns will be collective and neutral.
Additionally, there is no scope to build any romantic relationships in Hogwarts Legacy, either.
So, your witch/wizard selection quite certainly has no effect on character building, relationships, story progression, and interactions.
Clothing Items and Gear for Witches and Wizards
Whether you’re a witch or wizard, you can equip a variety of items through your gear slots and alter cosmetic features like your hair and accessories. Clothing items are available for all – irrespective of your choice between witch and wizard.
Some players have found that if they have chosen a wizard dormitory, they tend to find more trouser or pant items than skirts. But there is too little data to ascertain whether clothing items correspond to dorm choice.
