Did someone say…Shazam? Zachary Levi and his co-star for the new sequel of the DC movie sat at the SDCC panel and revealed the trailer, background, and future of Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the sequel of the 2019 film Shazam that featured a new hero in the DCEU. The story follows teen Billy Batson who is chosen by an old wizard to hold the powers of the champion who will defeat the Seven Deadly Sins and protect the world with his powers.
Shazam’s powers include shapeshifting, flying, electric bolts, super strength, and bulletproof. By the end of the first film, Billy Batson and his five foster siblings take on the mantle of the superhero Shazam, which is the trigger word for the children to turn into grown-up superheroes.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods will follow the story of Billy and his siblings’ journey into becoming the superheroes that the world needs while fighting the Daughters of Atlas, who have come to strip them of their powers.
The superhero film stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu, Helen Mirren, Djimon Hounsou, and more. The film is scheduled to release on December 21, 2022.
Zachary Levi has stated in the SDCC panel that the sequel is about Billy fitting into his new Shazam-ily, a.k.a his coining of the Shazam family. This is evident in the trailer as well, which begins with Zachary Levi’s superhero declaring he is “an idiot” who cannot even figure out how he fits into the role of a superhero while his siblings have owned it in their own ways.
Shazam mentions how he feels like a scam wearing a red suit with a lightning bolt on it since a superhero already exists with exactly that definition of a suit.
He was obviously mentioning Ezra Miller’s Flash as we see a shot of the Justice League hero along with mentions of Superman, Batman, and Aquaman—fans are even wondering if a cameo of one or all these DCEU heroes might be possible in the sequel.
The trailer shows Hounsou’s Shazam warning Billy (Asher Angel) that the Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu), the Daughters of Atlas, are coming to retake Atlas’ powers from the wrongly named superheroes.
Billy’s older sibling Mary (Grace Caroline Currey) states that the Daughters of Atlas possess mighty powers and adds, “I don’t know we fight powers like this.” Hounsou’s Shazam claims that their world “will not survive this,” probably referencing the fight between the gods and the superheroes whose powers have been granted by said gods.
The trailer features an amazing display of powers, devastating catastrophes, dragons, some superhero action, and a whole lot of intrigue and mystery surrounding the latest superhero addition of Anthea (Rachel Zigler), who possesses unknown powers.
Some other standout moments in the trailer were Zachary Levi’s line to Helen Mirren’s Hespera, saying, “I’ve seen all the Fast & Furious films, and it’s all about family.” The hilarious line is a great setup because Helen Mirren has played the iconic Queenie in the Fast & Furious films.
Another callback worth mentioning is the resurfacing of the Annabelle doll in the DCEU. The haunted doll has previously appeared in Aquaman (2018). We can see her briefly in the trailer in the pediatrician’s office to whom Levi’s Shazam has confessed his insecurities, among unicorn and Wonder Woman toys.
After the trailer showed, a fan posed the question about the future of Shazam and the possibility of Shazam 3. Zachary Levi’s vague answer carries a hint of hope for a third installment to the Shazam film series.
If you guys go and see this one, and you like it, I’m sure the bosses will want to make another one.
Levi also stated that he is interested in doing a third Shazam film and “loves doing this kind” of a movie.
