Shazam! Fury of the Gods has almost finished its run in theaters, just after four weeks of release.
The original Shazam! movie received excellent reviews in the DCEU, and its lower budget made up for its weaker box office performance. Both critics and audiences liked it, giving hope for its sequel.
However, Shazam! Fury of the Gods couldn’t replicate the same success with critics or at the box office, despite positive feedback from the audience.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods only managed to rake in $55.6 million from the local box office and $122 million worldwide.
Its third-weekend earnings were just $4.6 million, and it further plummeted to less than $2 million in the fourth weekend, which led to its early release on digital platforms for home viewing.
Given the rapid decline in its box office collections and its digital availability, it’s improbable that the movie will be able to generate much more revenue domestically, even if it continues to screen for another week or two.
Shazam 2 didn’t have the most promising start at the box office, opening to a disappointing $30.1 million domestically.
Unfortunately, things haven’t improved for the film, with a significant drop of almost 70 percent in its second weekend, followed by a 50 percent drop in its third weekend.
As we head into the fourth weekend, the movie has experienced yet another significant decline, earning less than $2 million over Easter.
To make matters worse, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has taken over the box office, leaving little hope for Shazam! Fury of the Gods to make a significant comeback.
It’s almost certain that the film won’t even reach $60 million domestically, which means it has already earned nearly 100 percent of its total box office earnings.
The initial Shazam! movie may not have been one of the DCEU’s top performers at the box office. However, it still made a profit by earning $140.4 million domestically and $366 million globally, despite its $100 million budget.
However, the current performance of its sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is not expected to come close to matching its predecessor’s success, bringing in only a third of its box office earnings.
It is especially curious because Warner Bros. Discovery appears to have let the film underperform with little effort into boosting its revenue.
It is evident from their marketing campaign, which revealed Gal Gadot’s cameo in the film and the decision to release it on digital platforms shortly after its theatrical release.
Despite receiving a “Rotten” rating from some critics (mainly top critics), the movie’s Fresh audience score suggests it could have performed better at the box office if properly marketed and released strategically.
Hopefully, future DC movies will have better release plans, and more profitable box office runs than Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
