David F. Sanberg, the director of upcoming DC flick, Shazam! Fury of the Gods explained that he is not impacted by the box-office clash with James Cameron’s upcoming fantasy film, Avatar: The Water of Water.
DC has begun the marketing campaign for Shazam! Fury of the Gods as the fans got an exclusive teaser and first look of the film at DC’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The film was initially supposed to release in summer 2023, but with Aquaman and The Flash delayed, it was preponed.
However, Shazam! 2 will face strong competition at the box office as it is getting released quite close to the much-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water. Earlier, Universal Pictures postponed the release date of the Mario animated movie to avoid competition from The Way of Water. However, Shazam! 2 has decided to stick to its December 2022 release date.
In an interview with SlashFilm, director David F. Sanberg elaborated on the box-office battle with The Way of Water. Check out his statement below.
“He should be very scared. This is the end of James Cameron. (laughs) No, I think it’s actually good, because they’re such different movies. I mean, look at the first ‘Avatar.’ There were other movies that came out at the same time and did really well … especially at Christmas … everybody knows that ‘Avatar’ is going to be, like, the biggest movie ever. I’m going to go see it. But yeah, there’s room for ‘Shazam!’ too.”

Sanberg thinks that though The Way of Water is all set to be the biggest holiday release of the year, there is scope for multiple films to be successful at the box office.
Warner Bros. has also shifted the release date of Shazam! 2 from December 16, 2022, to December 21, 2022. This gives Avatar: The Way of Water a solid five-day head start, and gives Shazam! Fury of the Gods some breathing space to hold its ground. Shazam! Fury of the Gods will also be able to hold solid business through January.
