Emmy Rossum Defends Her Casting as Tom Holland’s Mom in The Crowded Room

Tom Holland has been MIA ever since Spider-Man: No Way Home & Uncharted, enjoying life away from lights, camera, and action. Or at least that’s how it seems, but he’s been working on an Apple TV+ series where he plays a killer. Intriguing, isn’t it? I can one-up that! Did you know Shameless star Emmy Rossum plays his mother in the show?

Why is that surprising? Well, Rossum, 36, is only nine years older than the 27-year-old Tom Holland, which is a shocking age gap between a mother and son, fictional or not. Questions were raised at this stunning casting, but Rossum is here to clear it up.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Beautiful Creatures actress explained that it might seem weird, but “it made sense” when she read the script. She also added that the relationship between her Candy and Holland’s Danny is “beautiful”, and it was “really fun” working with him in this capacity. Read her full statement below:

It makes sense when I read the script. Candy’s a super young mom, she’s almost a child in her own right when she becomes pregnant at age 16. You watch as I age from 25 to 35, which is actually younger than I am now.

I was so taken with the series and really just loved all my scenes, especially with young Danny (Zachary Golinger). Our relationship was so beautiful and so I knew everything that we had that I had lost in the scenes with Tom. It was really fun.

This isn’t the first time that the age factor has taken a backburner when justifying the perfect casting. In Orange Is the New Black, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Dascha Polanco played mother and daughter, but in real life there’s only a two-year age gap between them. In Mean Girls, Amy Poehler is a mere seven years younger than Rachel McAdams.

In TV or films, there have also been several casting decisions made despite the parent figure being younger than their child in real life. In The Hobbit, Lee Pace played Orlando Bloom’s father even though he was two years younger than him. In The Vampire Diaries, Annie Wersching played Ian Somerhalder’s mom despite the actress being a year younger than her on-screen son.
