3. Episode 11 Recap

I. The Dark Drink

In Episode 11, Kate observes a drastic change in Emilico’s behaviour ever since he came back from the Debut. She has become excessively loyal to the Shadows family and shows no remorse for what happened to Rum.

Kate immediately infers that the dark coffee that Emilico had in the banquet is responsible for all these. She starts her investigation by going through all the books in herself, but none of them turns out to be helpful.

II. Treatment for Soot Sickness

While going through Emilico’s personal diary, she learns about “soot sickness.” It’s a disease that affects mental stability and can only be cured by making someone drink a lot of water.

Since Emilico’s symptoms are quite similar to that of “soot sickness,” Kate forces her to drink water till she vomits out the soot.

Right after gaining consciousness, Emilico breaks down into tears for what had happened to Rum. She feels guilty of getting mind-controlled by someone else and turning into a heartless puppet.

III. Emilico Goes Missing

Kate reveals to her that all the living dolls are actually humans being controlled by the higher-ups of the Shadows family. Not only that, there’s nothing called “living dolls” in the first place.

Thus, both of them agree to free everyone else from this prison known as “Shadows House.” But before they could take any step against the higher-ups, Emilico goes missing.

Kate brings together all the candidates of the Debut ceremony and asks for their help to find Emilico. She explains the current situation to everyone and exposes the sinister practices that the Shadows family has been doing for ages.

There’s no doubt that someone has kidnapped Emilio. Louise believes that Edward is the one pulling strings from the dark to test their loyalty to the Shadows House.

Now, that all of them have teamed up, can they bring this oppressive system down? Is Edward really the one behind Emilico’s kidnapping? We will find these out in the next episode.

5. About Shadows House

Shadows House is a slice of life supernatural manga by Soumatou. It was first released in Weekly Young Jump in September 2018.

The anime takes us to the mysterious, western-style mansion populated by a clan of “Shadows,” who imitate the trappings of human aristocracy. The Shadows have no faces and are attended by “Living dolls.”

The story follows Emiriko, a doll who serves Living Shadow Kate. Apart from being her maid, Emiriko is expected to become Kate’s “face” once her mistress is old enough to be introduced to the other mansion residents.
