September Release For Venom 2 After Upcoming Film Gets Delayed

Sony has officially delayed the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage to September 2021. Following his appearance in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, Sony planned to develop the character’s arc further into a movie of its own. Tom Hardy agreed to play the role of the alien-symbiote Marvel anti-hero, and surprisingly enough, Venom was a big hit.

The movie’s success pushed the studio to develop more spinoffs based on Spider-Man villains, but the most anticipated one is Venom 2. Teased in the post-credits of the original, the clip for the sequel showed Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady, which teases at Carnage’s appearance in the upcoming installment.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s title asserts that Harrelson’s character will indeed play an important role in what’s to come next. Fans who have been anxiously waiting for the sequel now seem to be in for more disappointment as the wait just got longer.

Sony announced that Venom: Let There Be Carnage has been postponed to September 17, 2021. It was previously announced that it would be released on June 25, 2021, after another eight months delay from its original October 2020 release date.

However, the delay was expected by many as earlier this year Universal Pictures announced F9’s delay to June 25, which confirmed that Venom would be moved off the date. Irrespective of the first Venom’s success, Sony is making a smart move by not putting too much pressure on the popular franchise. 

With the movie industry gradually getting back on its feet after the COVID-19 shutdowns, distancing itself from other prominent tentpoles and allowing the market to develop would financially benefit Sony and Venom 2.

Even though the film has been delayed, Sony Picture Universe’s release order of Marvel Characters remains unchanged. The sequel will still be coming out before Spider-Man: No Way Home (possibly owing to Tom Holland’s cameo in Venom 2) and even ahead of Morbius. 

The only snag other than the movie’s delay is a longer wait for the official trailer. Fans who have been waiting for director Andy Serkis’ second creation in the franchise are looking forward to getting a tease of Venom and Carnage’s live-action fights. But, with no other updates in sight, Sony could probably hold off on dropping the trailer even longer now.
