We know of worlds where heroes are revered as Gods. But the world of “Sentenced to Be a Hero” is different from what is typically expected. Being a hero is a sentence for the worst kind of criminals.
There’s no death; even if they fight for 100 years, they aren’t forgiven. The only way to get forgiveness is by exterminating the demon lord. It seems gruesome. Even with many hero stories these days, “Sentenced to Be a Hero” stands apart from the crowd and is set to receive an anime adaptation.
The Dengeki Bunko, 30th-anniversary event, announced that the “Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004” light novel series will receive an anime adaptation.
The production team’s Twitter account released an announcement video and commemorative visual. The video shows many of the light novels’ main characters.
The commemorative visual shows the significant characters of the light novel series, including the leader of Heros, Silo, and the 13th Goddess.
It was not announced whether the adaptation would be a TV series or a film. The voice cast, staff, and animation studio were also not revealed. We must wait for further updates to know more details.
Silo is the leader of “heroes” who are punished criminals. They are not pardoned even after being dead. They are revived on the battlefield and are sent to fight again.
Amidst this dark reality, Silo meets a Goddess who might be a light of hope. The light novel series is quite good. It is peculiar and gives a new meaning to “hero.”
All these years, every mode of entertainment has always glorified heroes. In recent years, people have tried to explore other aspects of heroism. This change is positive, and the anime will click with the audience.
About Sentenced to Be a Hero
Sentenced to Be a Hero is a Japanese light novel series written by Rocket Shokai and illustrated by Mephisto. This series first started on September 17, 2021, and is ongoing. A manga adaptation began in March 2022.
Yen Press describes the story as:
Heroism—a punishment for only the worst criminals. Those sentenced to the fate of a hero are forced to fight at the front lines against the demon king’s army—and if they die, they can expect to be revived and continue the battle. But when their leader, convicted of killing a goddess, meets another goddess himself, the contract they forge may be enough to change the world.
