Marvel’s Secret Invasion finale ends with the revelation of a dark theory about Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes and his role in the events of Avengers: Endgame.
As per the series, a Skrull infiltrator had taken the place of Rhodey and assumed his War Machine identity. The crucial question is when the swap occurred and what it means for the MCU. The final episode of Secret Invasion attempts to answer this very question.
Secret Invasion episode 4 had previously revealed that Rhodey was actually a Skrull who had infiltrated the White House as a trusted advisor to US President Ritson.
His mission was to escalate the tensions between the US and Russia and trigger a nuclear war that would wipe out humanity and allow the Skrulls to take over Earth. However, the last episode of Secret Invasion has apparently confirmed the duration of Rhodey’s absence in the MCU.
Rhodey is the only human prisoner who wears a hospital gown. When he is rescued by Talos’ daughter Gi’ah, she tells him that he has been in stasis for a long time.
Rhodey’s legs are also paralyzed due to the spinal injury he suffered in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and he does not have the leg braces he acquired later. So, the idea is that Rhodey was swapped by a Skrull when he was still in the hospital 9 years before the events of Marvel’s Secret Invasion.
This revelation has huge implications, as it implies that Rhodes’ War Machine was actually a Skrull impersonator for almost 10 years in the MCU. It means the real Rhodey was absent from not only the Battle of Wakanda in Avengers: Infinity War but also the five-year Blip that followed.
Most importantly, the sad truth of this reveal is that the real Rhodey must have also missed the events of Avengers: Endgame, a very dark and tragic twist considering the fate of Tony Stark’s Iron Man, Rhodey’s best friend.
To bring it all together, the Secret Invasion finale reveals that Rhodey was away for almost 10 years. During this period, a lot of important events took place in the MCU, including the events of Endgame. In his place, a shapeshifting Skrull was a part of all these events.

Secret Invasion is an upcoming television show on Disney+. It is based on the Marvel comic of the same name and will be a part of Marvel’s Phase Five.
