Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Secret Invasion, the Disney+ series that follows Nick Fury and Talos as they uncover a Skrull conspiracy that threatens to tear apart the world.
The show, which is based on the comic book storyline of the same name, promises to deliver plenty of twists and surprises as we find out who is really who in the MCU. One of the most discussed questions about the series premiere, which aired a few days ago, is whether anyone dies in the series.
Since we’ve only watched the Secret Invasion series premiere until now, that’s the only episode we can talk about as of writing this article. But the series premiere itself features a couple of important deaths. If you’ve not watched the episode yet, here’s your cue that this article contains major spoilers.
Yes, the first episode of Secret Invasion, titled “Resurrection”, features two deaths that have major implications for the rest of the series. The first one to die is Maria Hill, while the second one to die is the Skrull version of Everett Ross.
However, in a show where anyone can be a Skrull in disguise, death is not always what it seems. We have to wait for the next episodes to see whether these characters actually died, or if it was just an illusion.
Agent Maria Hill Dies in the Secret Invasion Premiere
In the premiere episode of Secret Invasion on Disney+, Agent Maria Hill, portrayed by Cobie Smulders, is killed in the line of duty. Despite their efforts to prevent a Skrull attack on Unity Day in Russia, Hill and Nick Fury, are unable to locate the Skrull terrorist Gravik.
But Gravik ultimately finds Hill first. At first, she is unaware of his presence as he had shape-shifted to resemble Fury. Taking advantage of the situation, Gravik shoots Hill in the stomach and kills her.
Hill is shot and killed at point-blank range by Gravik and it seems like her death is final. The premiere ends with Hill dying in Fury’s arms amid the explosive chaos all around them.
Before dying, Hill tells Fury, “It was you. Not me.” It’s a shocking and tragic ending for what seemed to be shaping up to be Hill’s biggest role in the MCU yet.
Is Everett Ross really dead in Secret Invasion?
The second death that we see in the premiere is that of a Skrull, who had shape-shifted to resemble Everett Ross. It is likely that the real Everett Ross is not dead and has been imprisoned by Gravik. The Skrull who had shape-shifted to resemble Ross is the one who dies in the Secret Invasion premiere.
The first episode of Secret Invasion reveals a major twist: Everett Ross, a former CIA agent who has appeared in several MCU movies, was actually a Skrull in disguise.
The Skrull-Ross was working for Gravik, the Skrull leader who wanted to overthrow the peaceful Skrull regime led by Talos. He met with Agent Prescod, a conspiracy theorist who had evidence of a Skrull invasion of Earth and tried to get the evidence from him.
However, Prescod became suspicious and attacked him, forcing the Skrull-Ross to kill him and flee. He was then chased by Talos and his allies, who were working with Nick Fury to stop Gravik’s plan.
The Skrull-Ross fell off a roof and died, revealing his true form to Talos and Fury. The real Ross was presumably still alive but held captive by Gravik in his hideout.
It was unclear how long he had been replaced by the Skrull-Ross, but it was likely that it happened recently, as his personal life was explored in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
